In 1999, Robert Downey Jr. was sentenced to three years in prison for failed drug tests but served only a year in prison. In 2001, while on parole, he was arrested for suspicion of being under the influence, leading to the loss of his role in ‘Ally McBeal’ and other projects.
Addiction seemed to be a pattern within the Downey family. His father, the cult filmmaker Robert Downey Sr., while battling substance abuse, introduced his son to marijuana at the shockingly young age of six. Their emotional connection over drugs eventually spiraled Downey into daily drinking habits.
Soon after, he went into rehab. His wife, Susan Downey, gave him an ultimatum, leading him to quit drugs in 2003. Downey attributes his sustained sobriety to a 12-step program that included yoga, meditation, and therapy. He believes his sobriety has been crucial to his remarkable career comeback. It seems the ‘Ironman’ has a resolve made of iron as well.
