It takes a village to raise a child, and it takes much more to train an Olympic medalist. Something, Omari Jones, the sole medal winner for boxing in the 2024 Paris Olympics, knows quite well as he presented his father, Karl Jones, with the prestigious ‘The Order of Ikkos’ award not too long ago.
Despite sending eight boxers to the games this year, USA’s boxing team could only win one bronze medal. While Jones was gunning for gold in the men’s welterweight division, he lost the fight against Uzbekistan’s Asadkhuja Muydinkhujaev in the semifinals on 6th August via a split decision, 3-2. Regardless, Jones joined the likes of Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard, and Oscar De La Hoya, who have brought medals for the country.
However, a couple of days after the Olympics concluded, USA Boxing turned to X yesterday, writing, “Olympic bronze medalist Omari Jones presented the Order of Ikkos award to his dad, Karl Jones”. Interestingly, the award was named after Ikkos of Tarentum, who was the first recorded Olympic coach in ancient Greece.

His hard work and training led several Tarentine athletes to win gold medals in the pentathlon, so his legacy is honored by this award. And every medal winner in the Olympics has the opportunity to present this award to one person who helped them win the medal. So, USA Boxing wrote, “Thank you Mr. Jones and all of the friends and families who continue to support Omari and the rest of the Team USA boxers throughout their boxing journeys!”
While it’s an honor for the father-son duo to receive the awards, the question now is, what do they have to say about it?

“He deserves it because of all the sacrifices [he made] during the tough time we have been through”, Jones added. His father, in turn, expressed pride in Omari’s dedication. “What it means to me is that hard work and discipline pay off,” he remarked. The award not only celebrates Omari’s achievements but also honors the supportive role his father has played in his boxing career.
Having said that, even though Omari Jones couldn’t get gold in the 2024 Paris Olympics, a bronze is no joke and this award should motivate him to get gold in the 2028 LA Olympics, that is, if boxing remains a part of the Olympic games. What did you think about the award?
