Home/Olympics

Erislandy Alvarez went through five layers of tests to win the second gold for Cuba. The Cienfuegos-born boxer, who turned 24 some ten days before the Olympics started, defeated the home favorite Sofiane Oumiha by a split decision. Alvarez had already grabbed headlines for the way he stopped Papua New Guinea’s John Ume in his fight during the preliminary rounds.

The sensational victory at Roland-Garros has been gaining considerable traction. Many have even started speculation on the young boxer’s next course of action. Across multiple posts that shared the news, several fans joined to share their viewpoints. A few had a word of caution as well.

The legacy continues: Erislandy Alvarez (3-0), Paris Olympics Gold Medalist

Calling out Erislandy Alvarez the ‘next Cuban amateur boxing star’, @EverythingBoxing shared the news of the lightweight gold medalist’s latest feat. Out of the five judges, three awarded theirs in Alvarez’s favor, while the remaining two saw the Frenchman in a better light.

In many ways, the Cuban exacted revenge for the loss Oumiha inflicted on last year’s world championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Losing 1-4 to Sofiane Oumiha, Erislandy Alvarez finally had to reconcile with a silver medal. Thankfully for him, destiny brought him and the French lightweight together for another dance.

Incidentally, Alvarez already has three professional fights under his belt. Commencing his career in February last year, the Cuban faced his last opponent on January 24 before returning to the summer games qualifiers.

Will Eddie Hearn ruin Erislandy Alvarez's career like he did with Andy Cruz?

Forge ahead, but keep the guards up!

Needless to say, most users appeared happy with the way things turned out for the young lightweight. But an offhand remark somehow found its way as well. Let’s check what some of the fans said about Erislandy Alvarez’s triumph.

Hoping a great professional tenure for Erislandy Alvarez, this fan cited the Tokyo Olympics gold medalist and three-time world champion Andy Cruz‘s example. They felt that perhaps, like the Matanzas-born Cruz, who is a 4-0 pro-boxer, Alvarez (already 3-0) might also have a great run.

Responding back to the post, a user hypothesized what might happen if Erislandy Alvarez joined the Matchroom Boxing. According to them, Eddie Hearn would probably derail the youngster’s career. But the reaction was promptly countered. Calling out the claim completely ridiculous, another fan cited Hearn’s successful management of fellow Cuban Andy Cruz.

Alvarez’s skills in the ring left this user completely stupefied.

Finding it one of the most engrossing boxing fights they had ever come across, this fan couldn’t resist heaping tons of praise on the boxers for putting on such a spectacular show.

The Oumiha-Alvarez fight reminded this fan of the classic boxing matches of yore. They found it an intense clash where both the boxers continuously moved forward and engaged aggressively.

Things took a clear turn from the way Erislandy Alvarez swept through the first round. All five judges gave him a perfect 10. But by the second round, Sofiane Oumiha promptly made a comeback and convinced three of the judges that he wasn’t out completely. The third round also followed a similar pattern. But it was a case of too little, too late for the tough Frenchman.

Thanks to Alvarez, Cuba managed to secure its second gold at the Paris Olympics. Had he failed to do so, then it would have been a crushing blow for the legendary Cuban boxing traditions. The country, which has thus far hauled 41 golds in its Olympic participations, had to settle with two silvers way back at the Mexico City Olympics.
