What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger! The Nietzschean aphorism perfectly encapsulates Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu-ting’s struggle during the Paris Olympics in 2024. Swept up in the deluge of hate comments received on social media due to the infamous gender controversy at the Olympics, ‘Ting’ showed immense resilience to reach the finals of the biggest sporting event in history.

She will now be facing Julia Szeremeta in the finals of the 57 kg category. “Of course it annoys you when reading some remarks, but all we can do is tell ourselves we can’t control what they say,” Lin told CNA English News before the Paris Olympics kicked off, choosing to turn a blind eye to baseless allegations of her being a biological male endangering women’s boxing at this year’s Olympics.

Nonetheless, she has survived the vicious jabs on social media as well as the squared circle and only has one thing on her mind right now: to bring the Olympic gold home and make her community in New Taipei proud. Ahead of the exciting showdown, let’s see how Lin Yu-ting matches up against her Polish opponent, Szeremeta.

Lin Yu-ting vs. Julia Szeremeta: Who wins on paper?

Ting stands at five foot nine inches (175 cm) and has a slight height advantage over her Polish opponent, who is five foot five inches (165 cm) tall. However, information regarding both boxers’ reach isn’t available in the public domain. Both pugilists have to meet the requirements of the women’s 57 kg, or 125.66 lbs, weight class, as the Olympics are quite stringent regarding meeting weight limits.

As per Boxrec, the Taiwanese boxer has forty-five wins in her amateur career, making her debut in 2013. Meanwhile, Szeremeta made her debut in 2020 and has defeated thirty-three opponents in her amateur career. The records clearly show that Ting has more boxing experience than her Polish counterpart. The Taiwanese boxer has 62 bouts under her name, overshadowing Szeremeta’s 43. But who among the two boxers poses a greater threat of knocking their opponent down onto the canvas? Well, both pugilists have an abysmal knockout ratio, with Lin Yu-ting knocking out one opponent in her entire career, while Szeremeta has no opponents in her knockout column.

Paris Olympics 2024 marks the 20-year-old Polish boxer’s debut at the biggest sporting event in the world. Meanwhile, this isn’t Yu-Ting’s first Olympic event, as she qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics but lost in the featherweight round of 16 bouts.

Based on her boxing experience on the amateur circuit and her prior experience at last year’s Olympics, the taller Taiwanese southpaw is the favorite to win the bout against the inexperienced orthodox Polish fighter. Nonetheless, let’s delve into both boxers’ prior achievements and their Olympic campaign so far.

Lin Yu-ting vs. Julia Szeremeta: Olympic campaign so far in Paris

Lin Yu-ting has been dominant in this year’s Olympics. She has won all three of her fights via unanimous decision, defeating Uzbeki fighter Sitora Turdibekova in the round of sixteen and then defeating Bulgarian boxer Svetlana Kamenova and Turkish boxer Esra Yildiz in the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively.

Previously, she has participated in many regional and international competitions, winning the world championships two times (bantamweight gold in 2018, featherweight gold in 2022, featherweight bronze in 2019), and the Asian Games one time (featherweight gold in 2022). Furthermore, she also went to the round of sixteen in the Tokyo Olympics 2021, falling short against Nesthy Petecio from the Philippines.

Meanwhile, ‘Shady’ also had a solid campaign in this year’s Olympics, having back-to-back unanimous decision wins against Australia’s Tina Rahimi and Puerto Rico’s Ashleyann Lozada in the round of sixteen and the quarterfinals, respectively. She secured her place in the finals with a hard-fought Majoriy decision win against Phillipines’ Nesthy Petecio.
