Virginia Fuchs vs Svetlana Soluianova: Fight Analysis

The go-to approach for most boxers with a height and reach disadvantage is to not allow the opponent to gauge distance. This gives the fighter with the longer reach enough room to land heavy shots while preventing the opponent from striking effectively. Naturally, Svetlana Soluianova tried to fight outside the pocket and tried to create distance to capitalize on her strengths.

However, 33-year-old Virginia Fuchs picked up on this right from the get-go. She kept her lead leg attached to Soluianova?s left leg; this allowed her to throw shots and prevent the Russian from pushing her out of striking range. Fuchs’ smart game plan helped her defuse her opponent’s constant straight jabs and made her approach ineffective right from round 1.

The momentum in round 2 went up a notch as both fighters displayed aggressive striking. Fuchs was even given a warning for pushing Soluianova in between. In this round, Fuchs left some room open for her Russian counterpart to implement her game plan. Svetlana Soluianova landed few straight jabs as and when the American fell out of the pocket and fought from the outside.

Virginia Fuchs dominated the last round. Drained, round 3 saw an increase in clinching and grappling. But the American boxer was in control of her movement and footwork till the end. Fuchs dropped Soluianova to the canvas multiple times. Even with that, Svetlana Soluianova won that round and the fight in two scorecards.

However, the majority scored in favor of the American Olympic boxing team captain. Virginia Fuch’s victory is Team USA’s fourth consecutive win so far and the second for the day with Keyshawn Davis defeating Dutch boxer Enrico Cruz. Virginia Fuchs will face Bulgaria’s Stoyka Krasteva next, who is also coming off a win against Vietnam’s Thi Tam Nguyen.
