Nothing has ever divided the boxing community quite like the potential September fight between Terence Crawford and Canelo Alvarez. It is a dream fight that has been piquing the interest of the boxing community for years now. And now that the fight might become a reality, no one can decide what to expect exactly.

While some point towards Canelo’s huge weight advantage, others think that the weight discrepancy won’t mean much in front of Bud Crawford’s superior abilities. Amidst the chaos, former WBA super lightweight champion Rolando Romero also offered his rather brutal perspective on the fight.

Betting against Canelo Alvarez is idiocy, says Rolly Romero

A few days ago, Rolly appeared in an unfiltered interview with The Schmo where he talked about various things. During the conversation, David Schmulenson aka The Schmo asked him about the Canelo Alvarez-Terence Crawford fight as the dream bout might take place in Romero’s hometown of Las Vegas.

Without missing a beat, Rolly attacked every Crawford supporter, stating, “Anyone that thinks Crawford has a chance is a complete idiot.” He continued his unabashed tirade, claiming that the weight discrepancy would be too much for Bud to surpass.

After all, “they have weight classes for a reason.” The difference of 13 lbs will be “way too big,” for the Omaha native, that too against Canelo Alvarez who is “way too skilled.” According to the Las Vegas native, in the end, this bout, “isn’t a skill matchup. It has nothing to do with skill. It has to do with weight,” and Canelo Alvarez has a massive advantage in that department.

What’s your perspective on:

Is betting against Canelo Alvarez really idiocy, or can Crawford's skills defy the weight odds?

Rolly has maintained the same stance on this dream bout for a while now. Schmulenson asked the same question to the Las Vegas native a few years ago and even at that time the latter predicted it to be a massacre, with Terence Crawford being the victim. “Imma tell you straight up…Canelo by murder against Crawford. They have weight classes for a reason,” Romero had predicted bluntly.

However, this is not the first time that the Nebraskan has heard the contentious points. He has been hearing the weight discrepancy argument for a long time and finally decided to give a reply to everyone last week.

Terence Crawford hellbent on proving everyone wrong

Last week, the Omaha native appeared in a conversation with Boxing Scene and claimed that the weight discrepancy is exactly what excites and motivates him about the Canelo fight. After all, “That’s what great fighters are all about – testing yourself against all the odds. That’s when great fighters perform their best.”

Furthermore, in contrast to what everyone thinks, Crawford thinks that he will “feel great” at 168 lbs. “I don’t need to worry about the weight. I’ve got a lot of things to prepare on. That’s part of boxing – [meeting] milestones you’ve got to hit. We’re going to be well prepared when that time comes,” stated Crawford confidently.

The Omaha native thinks that he has the capability to prove everyone wrong and that everyone is “going to see come fight time what my advantage is.” He will do the same things against Canelo Alvarez that he has done all his professional career and has confidence that his plan will work. According to him, in the end, the size difference won’t matter, no matter what everyone thinks.
