No rematch clause for Dubois—Is Eddie Hearn setting up Joshua for a fall?

Anthony Joshua is in turmoil and faces a tough choice after suffering a crushing defeat to Daniel Dubois. While he has refused to hang up gloves and wants to put on more shows for the fans, the question of his future looms larger. In such a situation, the boxing rationale suggests a rematch. But is a redemption showdown on the cards? Frank Warren‘s explanation might clear the picture after contrasting views on contractual obligations.

Whether ‘AJ’ goes for a rematch depends on the contract he signed with Dubois, 27, and it seems he might have to dance to Queensberry’s tune to have that rematch. Why so? Warren, 72, in a conversation with TalkSports, detailed the situation involving the two boxers. Dubois, at 22-2, entered the ring as the IBF champion, and despite that, Joshua, at 28-4, was the A-side on the negotiations table that came with certain perks and privileges.

‘Triple D’ didn’t sign up for a guaranteed rematch clause, whereas Joshua, 34, had a guaranteed rematch clause. It meant that in case Dubois had lost the bout, he couldn’t have another fight to reclaim the title he won from Filip Hrgovic. However, if Joshua had suffered the unfortunate outcome, he could get another shot at the title, which eventually was the result on September 21. But as ‘Dynamite’ defended his title, he doesn’t necessarily need to put pen to a new rematch contract.

TalkSports’ Michael Benson revealed all this when he turned to his X handle and wrote, “‼️ Frank Warren has insisted that Daniel Dubois does not have a guaranteed rematch clause in his contract to fight Anthony Joshua again next even though AJ apparently does, but regardless Warren added that they would be open to discussing a second fight.”

Given the scale of Joshua vs. Dubois and the traction it received, a rematch could very well be planned and staged. It might upset the IBF champion, who is next in line to face the winner of Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury for all the marbles. Besides Joshua, the only other man who is eager for a rematch is Eddie Hearn, who wants to shield his star boxer’s career.

No rematch clause for Dubois—Is Eddie Hearn setting up Joshua for a fall?

Have an interesting take?

Hearn, 45, in a conversation with DAZN, pointed out their confidence in having a rematch and triggering the clause. In addition, the Matchroom lynchpin expected a different outcome in the rematch, as he banked his faith in Joshua’s skills. He declared, “I’m sure he’ll [Anthony Joshua] exercise that rematch clause, that’s a given. He’ll need a rest. But it’s a dangerous fight. This guy’s growing in confidence all the time. But he’ll believe he can hurt Dubois.”

It remains to be seen how a rematch would pan out, as Dubois’ expectations and ambitions would be to fight for the undisputed crown next. Meanwhile, Hearn and Joshua will press for a rematch, citing the event’s commercial success. It all will depend on what Warren thinks is best for his fighter and whether his fighter will have an immediate shot at the undisputed title.
