Is Mike Tyson risking too much by stepping into the ring at nearly 60 years old?

November 15 will witness Jake Paul challenge veteran boxer Mike Tyson. While fans are excited to witness the clash at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, they are also worried about the 58-year-old’s health. A few months ago, Tyson experienced an ulcer flare-up, which delayed the fight from July 20 to November 15, and even though he has received a green light from his medical team, facing a 27-year-old seems risky. But ‘Iron’ is up for the challenge.

The Texas Department of Regulation and Licensing has been quite accommodating of other rules required for this fight. Here are some of the rules:

  1. Paul initially offered Tyson to fight ten, three-minute rounds. This was in line with a traditional, non-title fight. However, the older boxer declined and instead agreed to eight two-minute rounds. In fact, Tyson’s exhibition fight against Roy Jones Jr. in 2020 was also scheduled for eight, two-minute rounds.
  2. Paul and Tyson will wear 14-ounce gloves, which are heavier than the standard gloves.
  3. As per TDRL’s rules, the right must be at least 16 by 16 and a maximum of 24 by 24. The size of the ring is up to the promoter but must stay within range.

Mike Tyson, 58, versus Jake Paul, 27, also reminds us of a boxing match that happened in 1963 because of the vast age gap. Back then Archie Moore, 49, faced Mike DiBiase, 25, in his last bout before his retirement and won by third-round TKO. But here’s the twist. DiBiase was a wrestler, and it was his debut boxing match!

But what if Tyson versus Paul doesn’t have a similar outcome? Even Tim Welch, head coach and cornerman of UFC fighter Sean O’Malley, was worried and discussed the upcoming fight on his podcast. He was joined by Joe Riggs, Warlike, and Drew Nickens. “Hopefully we don’t see a death there,” Welch said. And former MMA fighter Joe Riggs responded, “You are going to see the beating of an old man. That’s sad. He is not going two rounds.”

Welch: “I believe, yeah, I hope supposedly they have bigger gloves on which is good. I just hope Mike Tyson doesn’t get hurt.”

Warlike: “But I think, also, the fact that they are trying to sell it to Netflix, I think that there is a good chance that in the fine print somewhere, there is a no knockout clause because if Netflix is trying to acquire that, they are not gonna try to acquire a one minute fight of Jake Paul knocking out Mike Tyson.”

According to him, from a business point of view, it makes no sense if Tyson gets knocked out in the first round. Netflix will not play millions to acquire the fight just to see it getting finished in one round is what they speculated on Red Hawk Recap on Tim Welch’s YouTube channel.

Well, the men were merely speculating and so far, there is no official confirmation about the no-knockout clause. Netflix is trying its best to hype up the upcoming fight. They released the official trailer for the upcoming bout featuring Jake Paul and Mike Tyson.

Netflix’s cinematic trailer for Jake Paul Mike Tyson fight!

With just a month left, Netflix released the official trailer for the fight. With little doubt, it is one of the biggest fights of the year. The trailer featured El Gallo and the Baddest Man on the Planet inside the ring getting ready for the bout. It showcased their best career moments, as they both claimed to be the face of the sport. The trailer ended with the duo getting in each other’s faces inside the ring as the credits rolled in.

Not only that, the streaming giant is also going to release a three-part documentary series about the fight titled Countdown: Paul vs. Tyson. They will release the first two episodes on November 7. Likewise, the final episode will be released on November 12.

While Netflix and both fighters are leaving no stone unturned, the concern regarding Mike Tyson’s health will remain in everyone’s heart. After all, it is not a wise thing to step into a boxing ring at the age of 58.
