On April 23rd, after his collision with former training partner Dillian Whyte, Tyson Fury retired from the sport of boxing. Over 90,000 fans attended Whyte vs. Fury as ‘The Gypsy King’ ruled the night inside the ring. Following his fight with Whyte, despite being repeatedly asked if he planned to return to the ring, he announced he was adamant and that it was best that he stayed away from boxing.

In an interview with Behind the Gloves correspondent Michelle Joy Phelps, ‘The Gypsy King’ admitted how empty his life was, even with large amounts of money. Although he was away from boxing, he revealed he could not simply walk away from the fight game.

Fury said, “I’ve found that even with large amounts of money, I’m really empty without the fight game. I was away from boxing for four months but I can’t walk away. I think I’m going to need mental help to let go of it.”

Previously Tyson Fury dealt with mental health problems that resulted in a break from boxing. He was even guilty of substance abuse and later admitted that he was on the verge of committing suicide.

Fury’s last fight in the ring was a hit. As promoter Frank Warren had said at the time, Fury vs. Whyte introduced one of the biggest events in the history of British boxing. Reportedly, ‘The Gypsy King’ even made almost $22 Million from that fight. Irrespective of such a big moment earned in his life, away from boxing, Fury felt ’empty.’

After his retirement, Fury even demanded ‘half-a-billy’ to return to the ring. Despite what Fury said, boxing fans believed he could return following the second Anthony Joshua vs. Oleksandr Usyk fight. On 20th August, after Usyk beat Joshua for the second time, Fury announced he was returning one more time.
