

Legendary boxing coach Floyd Mayweather Sr. had an odd childhood with his father not being present most of the time during his childhood. However, he wouldn’t hold any grudges against his father and developed a sort of friendship with him rather than being a rebellious child.

In the book ‘Money: The Life and Fast Times of Floyd Mayweather’, renowned author Tris Dixon gives an insight into how Mayweather Sr. developed a friendship with his grandfather after an incident that angered his mother a lot. Moreover, it is even revealed how Floyd Mayweather Jr. had to shoulder some of his father’s responsibilities when it came to his grandfather.

Floyd Mayweather Sr. describes an incident that helped him befriend his father
On the 178th page, Mayweather Sr. reveals that his parents were separated and did not live together. He then adds that while he doesn’t have any vivid memory of his father, he did remember the time he gave him $100 which was a huge sum for a child at the time. Moreover, he detailed how this developed a friendship between the two and even angered his mother.
“My mum and dad were separated most of my life. ‘I didn’t really know my father other than he would come over from time to time, I remember once when I was about four or five, he gave me $100 and my mother was angry because I thought he was the greatest man on the planet. I thought it was so much money it would last me forever. He was more like a friend, but I didn’t become rebellious and I didn’t hold a grudge,” he said.

This was not all as following his father’s death Mayweather Sr. or his brother Roger didn’t have the money to pay for the funeral. This promoted Mayweather Jr. to pay for all the costs of his grandfather’s funeral.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. paid for his grandfather’s funeral despite not knowing much about him
Mayweather Sr. stated that ‘Money’ paid for the funeral although he wasn’t too aware of his grandfather. He added that this gesture was very selfless and even detailed how he appreciated his son for stepping up.
“In the end, though, it was down to Floyd Jr. to pay for his grandfather’s funeral. All of it. ‘My son didn’t know his grandfather like that but he still gave that money. ‘He was getting his hands wrapped [be- fore a fight], and I went over to him and kissed him, and hugged him, and I told him I appreciate what he did for my father,” he added.

While Mayweather Jr., did not have a standing relationship with his grandfather, he still paid for his funeral only due to the respect he had for his father and uncle. This is understandable given Mayweather Sr. and Roger were the ones who helped ‘TBE’ to reach unprecedented heights in the sport of boxing.
