He then adds that while he doesn’t have any vivid memory of his father, he did remember the time he gave him $100 which was a huge sum for a child at the time. Moreover, he detailed how this developed a friendship between the two and even angered his mother.

My mum and dad were separated most of my life. ‘I didn’t really know my father other than he would come over from time to time, I remember once when I was about four or five, he gave me $100 and my mother was angry because I thought he was the greatest man on the planet. I thought it was so much money it would last me forever. He was more like a friend, but I didn’t become rebellious and I didn’t hold a grudge,”  he said.

In the end, though, it was down to Floyd Jr. to pay for his grandfather’s funeral. All of it. ‘My son didn’t know his grandfather like that but he still gave that money. ‘He was getting his hands wrapped [be- fore a fight], and I went over to him and kissed him, and hugged him, and I told him I appreciate what he did for my father,” he added.

While Mayweather Jr., did not have a standing relationship with his grandfather, he still paid for his funeral only due to the respect he had for his father and uncle. This is understandable given Mayweather Sr. and Roger were the ones who helped ‘TBE’ to reach unprecedented heights in the sport of boxing.
