Canelo Alvarez is leaving no stone unturned to prepare himself against Jermell Charlo. The Super Middleweight champion will meet the undisputed Light Middleweight champion on September 30 in Las Vegas. The former’s titles are at stake; this is his third defense since becoming an undisputed champion in 2021. To stay focused and away from all distractions, Alvarez has reportedly moved out of his San Diego base and relocated to a new location. Speaking to the media, he revealed the reasons for taking such measures.
Soon after his first title defense against Gennady Golovkin in September last year, Canelo Alvarez had to undergo hand surgery. But he returned in May to face John Ryder. Though he won the match, his performance allowed many to raise questions about his form. Amidst offers for a David Benavidez fight, Alvarez mentioned pursuing Dmitry Bivol to avenge last year’s loss. Then, talks of a battle with Jermall Charlo came about. But, finally, when the dust settled, his twin brother, the Middleweight champion Jermell Charlo, emerged.

So he was talking to Fight Hub TV. He shared his views on ‘Iron Man’ and the possibilities of facing Terence Crawford. Then, switching tracks, the reporter asked, “…just continuing your career in Lake Tahoe? I know you’ve changed camps from San Diego to Lake Tahoe. What has that process been like for you, and why’d you make the move?” Alvarez responded that the move has been relatively positive and clarified that his camp is in Truckee, California, instead of Lake Tahoe.
Then, he explained that the site offered an altitudinal advantage. He said, “…I am in Truckee, California, right now for the altitude because, you know, when I fought in[in] Guadalajara, I feel the difference for the attitude. I feel better; my body feels better, obviously for my heart, but I feel better and everything, so that’s why [I] I choose to come here [to] to that and turning in the altitude because [my] my body feels good.”

With an elevation of 5,817 feet above sea level, Truckee is home to over seventeen thousand people. Training in isolation is seemingly a standard approach for the Mexican champion. Big Bear, another site in California, a favorite among several other boxers, like Oscar De La Hoya, Shane Mosley, and Gennady Golovkin, used to be another preferred location for Canelo Alvarez.
