Muhammad Ali, the legendary boxer whose charisma and prowess transcended the sport, embarked on his remarkable boxing journey at the tender age of 12. It all began with the unfortunate theft of his prized possession – a shiny $60 bicycle.

In the tough neighborhood where Ali grew up, an unexpected twist occurred when someone stole his cherished bicycle from the front yard. Unaware that this seemingly unfortunate event would steer him toward the boxing ring, Ali embarked on an unforeseen journey.

Muhammad Ali Finds Peace in Boxing

Ali’s introduction to boxing was unique—he didn’t stumble upon it through a passion for the sport but rather as a consequence of a stolen possession. With his cousin being a somewhat unsuccessful boxer, a peculiar deal was struck.

If Ali could track down the thief who took his bicycle, his cousin promised to impart the skills to defend himself. It was a child’s logic, driven by the desire for justice and the yearning to reclaim what was rightfully his.

In an old resurfaced clip, posted to Instagram, a young Ali can be seen narrating how he ended up at a boxing gym. “My bicycle was stolen and my cousin was a boxer. He wasn’t too successful but he boxed and he told me that he would train me if I ever catch the guy,” said Ali to the interviewer.

Although his cousin was not a star in the ring, he proved a good teacher. The simple bicycle stolen from him turned the little kid into a young pugilist. Soon, the gym became Ali’s new arena. While Ali initially entered the fight seeking revenge for a stolen possession, he discovered something more profound within the gym’s four corners—self-discovery and a sense of purpose.

Did young Ali get his bike back?

The interviewer then digs deeper into the mystery that remains unsolved to this day—did Ali catch the boy who stole his bicycle? However, the answer, given with a shrug and a little nostalgia, is simply, “Never did.” Ali mentioned that he is no longer searching for the bicycle thief. Chuckling, he says, “No, no, not now. I was just a kid then,” highlighting the shift in his perspective over time.
