Boxing legend Mike Tyson was one of the most fearsome and frightening boxers of his generation. The former heavyweight champion struck fear into his opponents, being a master of mental intimidation making many of his foes lose before even stepping into the ring. However, it shouldn’t be surprising that ‘Iron Mike’ was emotionally unstable for the majority of his boxing career given the childhood trauma he suffered.
Tyson came from a poverty-stricken home with his biological father leaving him and his mother. Moreover, his mother reportedly had issues with alcoholism which combined with her situation, subjected Tyson to a lot of physical abuse. He even detailed how he was traumatized by his mother physically beating him on many occasions.

On the 34th page of his book, Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth, he detailed how his mother’s beatings would have a lasting mental impact on him. Tyson stated that his mother would get drunk and often beat him when he was in lock-up. Moreover, this would result in him getting flashbacks of his beatings years after they took place.
“I used to hate when my mother would get into the precinct and beat my a**. Afterwards her and her friends would get drunk and she’d
talk about how she beat the shit out of me. I’d be curled up in the corner trying to shield myself, and she’d attack me. That was some traumatizing s**t. To this day I glance at the corners of any room I’m in and I have to look away because it reminds me of all the beatings my mother gave me,” he said.
Although these ‘beatings’ would stay with ‘Iron Mike’ for a long time, he did get one benefit out of this. However, the price to pay for that was to get brutally beaten by his mother.

“She didn’t think nothing of beating me in a grocery store, in the street, in front of my schoolmates, or in the courtroom. The police certainly didn’t care. One time they were supposed to write up a report on me and my mother stormed in and beat my a*s so bad they didn’t even write me up,” he added.
It looks like Tyson was saved from spending a night in custody due to his mother. However, he had to sustain a physical assault by his which might have been far worse than being locked up. Moreover, it affected him to the point that he claimed his mother’s death was the best thing to have happened to him. This only shows how Tyson’s past plagued his life as he grew from a nobody to a boxing legend.
