Fans and followers are inching toward one of the year’s most significant fights. The buildup to the Gervonta Davis vs Ryan Garcia fight has so far lived up to the expectations. The New York and Los Angeles press conferences had their share of moments, but thankfully never went out of hand. Both camps are busy in the game of one-upmanship. But amidst all the hype, quiet, hushed-up discussions have found their way, asking what is next after the fight. It is established that the bout’s winner would be the division’s next signature representative, if not the sport’s.
Gervonta Davis, with a 93% knockout rate and a spotless, undefeated record, has emerged as the crowd favorite. Though critics abound, most agree that his incredible strength might be one of the deciding factors in the match against Ryan Garcia. Only two of his career matches have been settled through decisions. Otherwise, barring a few rare occasions, such as the fight with Hector Garcia, Mario Barrios, Yuriorkis Gamboa, and Francisco Fonseca, “Tank” never allowed a bout to proceed beyond the sixth round.

Despite the southpaw’s size, many back him soundly, for they know that Davis can hit way above his weight. Some of those voices come from the least expected corners. Some two years after he started on his professional journey, Gervonta Davis signed up with undefeated champion Floyd Mayweather Jr.‘s Mayweather Promotions in 2015.
The next seven years saw the boxer win multiple titles across the three weight divisions. But the fighter decided to part ways with his mentor by late 2022, ahead of his title defense against Hector Garcia. It was an amicable separation by all means, with the Baltimorean thanking Mayweather Jr. for all the help extended through the years they were together.
“This just a test run right now, just on my own type of joint. But much love to Mayweather Promotions, Leonard, Floyd, all them guys. I definitely appreciate them, but I’m just doing my own thing now. I’m not saying in the future we can’t work together or anything like that.” said Davis.
Former promoter asserts that ‘Tank’ Davis is the best there is
A big attestation to Davis’ prowess is the voice of support he received from Leonard Ellerbe. The fifty-seven-year-old CEO of Mayweather Promotions, himself a former amateur boxer, knows the business of boxing like the back of his hand.
Yesterday night through his Twitter handle, he said, “Love it or hate it, for years, I’ve been saying @Gervontaa will eventually be the biggest star in the sport; when he wins on April 22, he will be the new face of boxing!!!“

Such straight-from-the-shoulder talk from one of the sport’s top honchos is bound to turn heads. Already more than 100k have viewed the post, and over a hundred have retweeted it. While many agreed, there were a few voices of dissent as well. For instance, a user said, “I think he’s gotta beat Dev [Devin Haney] for that tho, he’ll definitely be one of the biggest stars, but I think he’s gotta dethrone Dev to be the biggest, and idk if that fight goes his way gonna be, close fr.”
For now, such words of encouragement will go a long way in boosting the Davis camp’s morale. But as it’s often said, every boxer is as good as the next bout. Ryan Garcia is no pushover fighter, either. There have been several questions about his chin. But he has repeatedly proved his detractors wrong by letting his lightning-fast punching speed and crushing strength do the talking.
