It’s Mike Tyson and Jake Paul everywhere. From the brief tumble that it faced in June, the fight has since taken long strides. The lead-up has witnessed a frenzied excitement. While on one side you have one of boxing’s greatest heavyweights, at the opposite corner there’s a YouTuber-turned-boxer, thirty years his junior. However, despite the intrigue and hype around the fight gaining momentum, in several corners whispers of disapproval also emerged.
The age gap between the two was already a cause for concern. Following the ulcer flare-up, anxiety over Mike Tyson’s health swelled. A few feel the fight is just another display that overshadows a rather much-anticipated showdown between trailblazers Amanda Serrano and Katie Taylor. To Robert Garcia, the Tyson-Paul fight is nothing short of a ‘show’. To make his case, he drew a rather interesting analogy while speaking with Fight Hub TV’s Marcos Villegas.
The varied perspectives about the fight and its outcome confounded Villegas. He sought Robert Garcia’s views on the matter. The trainer, who has had a fantastic run this year with many of his pupils winning championships, stated matter-of-factly that it will be a ‘huge event’. The Netflix livestream and the presence of a huge crowd could make this mega-card truly unforgettable.

However, when it came to his personal feelings, Robert Garcia didn’t appear in sync with the usual narratives. “Honestly, you know to me it’s just a show; it’s like, like, people paying their tickets and paying pay-per-view to watch Royal Rumble,” Robert Garcia explained.
His concerns primarily centered around Mike Tyson—his age, health, ring inactivity, and especially the pre-retirement bouts. Robert Garcia highlighted how some of ‘Iron’ Mike’s fights, which followed the loss to Lennox Lewis, ended quite badly. In 2004 and 2005, Tyson suffered consecutive defeats at the hands of Danny Williams and Kevin McBride. His last professional bout ended in a sixth-round retirement.
When he was still active professionally, Robert Garcia opined, Tyson could barely defeat relatively unknown boxers. “So what makes us think that 20 years later he’s going to be a monster like he was in his early 20s knocking everybody out?” he asked.

Expressing his admiration for Mike Tyson, Garcia recalled the times when he fought on some of his undercards. Despite being ten years younger, he knows that he would never be able to compete against ‘Iron’ Mike. However, that’s not the case with Jake Paul. Despite lacking boxing skills and experience, ‘The Problem Child’ is much younger and stronger when he steps into the ring.
“So at the end, I think it’s just going to be a show where they’re going to go out there and perform for a huge, huge crowd and the millions and millions watching on Netflix. I think it’s going to be just the performance, just the entertainment. I don’t really think it’s going to be a real fight,” the award-winning trainer surmised.

Robert Garcia’s thoughts may resonate among many fans. Nevertheless, there are a few who believe that ‘Iron’ Mike has the wherewithal to school his young opponent. It’s difficult to say whether Tyson will fight the way he did in his prime. However, he still remains the man whose mere presence once sent shivers down the spines of the toughest fighters. Given that the rounds in the fight have been limited to two minutes, fans can definitely expect some sharp and intriguing exchanges.
