Boxing legend Mike Tyson was involved in one of the most iconic moments in boxing history. In 1997 he was disqualified for biting Evander Holyfield’s ear in their rematch. However, in a tragic tale of events, the person who officiated the match recently passed away.

Mills Lane, the hall-of-fame referee who officiated over 100 bouts in his career, including Tyson and Holyfield’s rematch, passed away at the age of 85. It was reported that he passed away Tuesday morning at his Reno, Nevada home. Despite his passing away now, Lane was suffering from poor health since he got a stroke back in 2002 ending his career.

Moreover, millions of fans across the globe came together to mourn the loss of one of the best referees in the sport. This even included Tyson’s son, Amir Tyson, who posted a story on his Instagram sharing a photo of the icon.

Tyson’s son was one of many boxing fans who have been devastated after hearing this tragic news. However, Lane will be remembered as one of the if not the best referees in the sport of boxing.

A look into the career and life of Mills Lane

Before becoming a boxing referee, Lane was a Marine and served the US for three years before attending college. He even went on to box professionally in college, also winning his first 10 fights and retiring with a record of 10-1. Moreover, he even had a successful career in law as a prosecutor before eventually finding his way as a referee. Lane officiated in a number of controversial heavyweight fights. This included the second meeting between Holyfield and Riddick Bowe in 1993, which was interrupted by a paraglider landing in the ring.

He threw out a distressed Oliver McCall from his 1997 rematch with Lennox Lewis and also disqualified Henry Akinwande for excessive holding against Lewis four months later. In addition to this, his iconic catchphrase “Let’s get it on” has become synonymous with the legend who was inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame in 2013. The life of Lane was a storied one, but like all good things, this also had to end. However, he will forever be remembered by fans of the sport.
