Critics of the sport often lament that boxing follows the Heavyweights. It may not be entirely incorrect. After all, deep inside, who doesn’t like seeing two heavily built men gifted with otherworldly strength and skill dueling it out in the ring? While other divisions have their share of superstars, arguably, the Heavyweight division started stealing the lion’s share of major headlines from Jack Dempsey‘s days. A strong line of luminaries such as Joe Luis, Rocky Marciano, and Floyd Patterson carried the torch. Then, the game changed with the arrival of Muhammad Ali.
Reportedly many parts of the world witnessed a declining interest in boxing with his departure. However, the lady luck had yet to abandon the sport. A new signature representative of the division in particular and the sport, in general, appeared by the mid-80s. Mike Tyson changed the way Heavyweight boxing was looked at. His fast, super-aggressive fighting style became the template to be followed by the subsequent generations of boxers.

It’s been over fifteen years since he left the shores that fetched him fame and money. But Mike Tyson has been there at the top and seen a lot. Hence no wonder his views and opinions are looked upon and highly regarded by fans and pundits alike.
He is in Saudi Arabia for the Jake Paul versus Tommy Fury fight. So naturally, media houses quickly went for the kill when they found him at the press conference.
talkSPORT’s Spencer Oliver spoke to the youngest Heavyweight boxing champion in boxing’s history. He started the interview by asking Tyson about his take on the Paul and Fury fight.
Tyson explained that he had seen Jake Paul fight in the past. But he hasn’t had such a bit of luck in Tommy Fury’s case. Hence in his opinion, it’s an open fight that could go either way. When Oliver persisted that, unlike Fury, Jake Paul doesn’t come from solid boxing traditions, Tyson said, “Well, he do have boxing experience; he boxed before because it shows in his fight that is he won against people that he shouldn’t have beat and listen um I don’t think they brought him here to lose either…because he’s good for fighting good for boxing he makes.”
Mike Tyson’s current Heavyweight favorites
Moving on, Oliver asked, “I mean can we talk about a little bit about the heavy current heavyweight division at the moment as well, Tyson Fury, Deontay Wilder, Alexander Usyk? What do you think of those guys, and who do you rate as the best at pound for pound at the moment?“
After pondering briefly, Tyson replied, “Tyson Fury proved over and over again he’s the best. I respect Deontay Wilder, and Usyk with the most respect I possess.”

The current Heavyweight lineup has never been so exciting. Tyson Fury is the WBC champion on the front line. On the other hand, Oleksandr Usyk holds the WBA (Super), WBO, IBF, IBO, and The Ring titles. But the array of challengers, which includes Deontay Wilder, Anthony Joshua, and Andy Ruiz Jr., makes it equally formidable. The talks of a climactic fight between Fury and Usyk seem to have made the grades. Nevertheless, Wilder’s anticipated fight with Ruiz Jr. or Anthony Joshua has a similar potential to keep the fans engaged for a couple of years to come.
