Mike Tyson’s podcast, ‘Hotboxin with Mike Tyson’ has earned notoriety for the diverse faces it hosts who divulge some important discourses. Every week, when the heavyweight boxer sits with new guests, fans know that the conversation is going to open an entirely new Pandora’s box. And that is what he did this week with Neuroscience Professor and Researcher, Andrew Huberman. As the two indulged in a conversation about the sources of creativity, and life’s inspiration in channeling it, ‘Iron Mike’ broke the entire facade of one ‘knowing life’.
He said, “I mean some people party all their life and some people try to figure what life is all about. And at the end of the they both know nothing about life. You know, I think it’s beyond comprehension. We make it the way we want it to be in our mind but anything is beyond us to even understand what this is all about.”
Adding to his idea of giving meaning to life that is created by humans, his cohost said, “It’s funny you said that. How do you see what’s inside your head? And how do you get these answers from these scientists?” Furthering this existential take on life, Huberman called humans a ‘storytelling species,’ and rightly so. If humans don’t weave stories, who will?
A Take on Mental Health: Iron Mike Discusses Rising Numbers
His conversation with Huberman is truly an insight into how life works today and the thinking that one puts behind it. It is these conversations that contribute to the bigger scheme of things that help folks understand what might have gone wrong and where. Today, the world grapples with the rising numbers of people struggling with their mental health. On this premise, Tyson thought it was appropriate to address it on his show. And who better to answer his questions than a neuroscience professor?
When the former world champion quizzed the professor on why the world struggles so much with mental health today, the latter attributed it to the possible overuse of medications. He maintained that drugs were given to folks to navigate through their disorders like ADHD. They might have helped them. However, longer use of these medications might have worsened the condition for some. He suggested, “Behaviours should always go first: exercise, sunlight, social connection, quality sleep, meditation, stress control, these kinds of things.”
