Mike Tyson Can’t Get Enough of Sugar Ray Robinson’s Record

In a two-year-old episode of Hotboxin’, Mike Tyson found himself opposite Damian Lillard discussing boxing. While Lillard expressed his inclination towards boxing, Tyson questioned and informed him about boxers of the “old times” who had hundreds of matches in the ring. Lillard, who introduced ‘Dame Time’ in the NBA, was introduced to Sugar Ray Robinson that day on HotBoxin’.

Attracting Lillard’s attention, the former heavyweight champion of the world said, “Have you watched Sugar Ray Robinson fight? Isn’t he amazing?” As Lillard politely agreed, ‘Kid Dynamite’ offered the former a tour of Ray Robinson’s records and history of fighting. With great enthusiasm in his voice, Tyson began by saying, “Let me talk to you about great fighting. Listen right. Sugar Ray Robinson had 4o fights to 40-0, and then he lost one fight.” 

Jake LaMotta is the opponent that Tyson referred to, the boxer to hand Robinson his first defeat in boxing. Robinson and LaMotta had a total of six fights in the ring. “And after he lost that one fight, he went 80 fights undefeated. So the record was 174-1. And around 85 knockouts,” Tyson added by saying. By the time Sugar Ray Robinson retired from boxing, he had a professional record comprising 6 draws, 29 losses, and 174 wins!

Tyson’s idol Muhammad Ali had unparalleled respect for Sugar Ray Robinson in boxing

While Ali would call himself the “greatest heavyweight of all time”, he would declare Ray Robinson “the greatest of all time” in the sport of boxing. Ali, who inspired Mike Tyson, found Robison beautiful with his skills in the ring. “That man was beautiful. Timing, speed, reflexes, rhythm, his body, everything was beautiful. I’d say I’m the greatest heavyweight of all time, but pound-for-pound, I still say Sugar Ray Robinson was the greatest of all time,” declared Ali.

Robinson made his professional debut in 1940 and continued till 1965. An unimaginable figure of 109 fights described his victory via knockouts in the professional ring.
