Callum Smith faced Lenin Castillo on Saturday night on the undercard of the Joshua vs Usyk fight. Callum Smith looked to go back to winning ways in his first fight following his loss to Canelo Alvarez. He fought the 33-year-old Dominican fighter, Lenin Castillo.

In the second round of the fight, Smith delivered a straight right hook that landed straight on his temple. The punch knocked Castillo down and caused his legs to spasm as he lay prone on the mat. Eddie Hearn reported that Castillo was responsive but needed medical attention right after the bout.

Journalist Dan Rafael provided an update on the Dominican fighter via Twitter. Castillo left the hospital and everything seemed fine. He will now travel back home and look to recover.

Callum ‘Mundo’ Smith reflected on the brutal knockout saying, “It’s not nice. I celebrated before and then I realized how bad it was. That’s the last thing you want to see. Boxing is a tough enough sport as it is and we all have families to go home to.”

The fight and the punch were a reminder to boxers and non-boxers as well, of the dangers associated with the sport of boxing. One truly can not ‘play boxing’. The sweet science can cause permanent damage to a healthy fighter and that is the risk every boxer takes every time they step into the ring.

What’s next for Callum Smith after a brutal knockout victory against Lenin Castillo?

Callum Smith lost his undefeated record and his WBA and Ring magazine titles to Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez back in December 2020. Since then The Briton fought for the first time on Saturday as he faced Lenin Castillo.
