Gervonta Davis faces the uphill task of maintaining his unblemished record as he defends his WBA lightweight crown against Frank Martin on June 15. The American boxer has bludgeoned his opponents in the ring but is coming off a lengthy layoff since defeating Ryan Garcia last April, which might be of bother for the former. So, when he talked about the uncertainty of boxing as a sport, a fan mistook it as nervousness.

‘Tank’ appeared in a clip where he discussed the unpredictable nature of boxing and the unfortunate fate any boxer can meet. He said, “You go to a fight, you always gotta worry about what’s someone might do to you. You know how good you are. But it’s still like, what can he bring to the table, you know. He might bring something crazy that night or you might be off. So, I mean, it’s a love-hate for the sport but it’s cool.”

However, the fan wondered whether these comments meant he was “nervous” before his fight. They asked, “Does GTD sound nervous ?” Martin, 29, is one of the most polished and prolific fighters Davis, 29, will face to date. Besides, Martin has an untainted boxing record at 18-0 and, despite being an underdog, has enough weapons, such as speed, to cause an upset. But Mayweather Promotions’ CEO, Leonard Ellerbe, brushed aside these apprehensions as he lauded Davis’ mentality.

Ellerbe turned to his X handle and hit back at the fan, “You clearly have never been around greatness. Mindset.”

Strengthening Ellerbe’s argument, Davis, at 29-0, recently specified his intent to knock out Martin in a Muhammad Ali fashion when he dropped the round number in which he would put down his challenger – “9!!” read his prediction. Meanwhile, ‘The Martin’ remains confident of pulling off a victory.

Frank Martin is ready to upset the boxing world against Gervonta Davis

Martin, who has sparred with Davis in the past and buzzed him once, has been upbeat about his chances. During an Instagram live, the Detroit native declared himself the favorite to bag a win. He added, “Just me going out and being who I am. I’m going to come out with my hand raised.” Martin brought similar confidence to the first press conference a couple of days ago, where he reiterated his stance to do the unthinkable.

Martin is coming into the fight on the heels of a close contest against Artem Harutyunyan. He looks to build on that momentum and snatch the WBA lightweight crown from Davis. It remains to be seen whether he can shift the dynamics of the 135-pound division. But one thing is for sure, the fight will lack no entertainment.
