Eddie Hearn and his fighters have been in long-lasting feuds with several promotions. However, his banter with Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe seems to have crossed the lines. Hearn and Ellerbe have been competing against each other for a long time on business scales. This weekend, both men hosted their star lightweight fighters- Devin Haney and Gervonta Davis on two blockbuster nights.
WBC lightweight champion Haney defended his belt against ‘JoJo’ Diaz on Saturday; Gervonta Davis defended his WBA strap against Isaac Cruz on Sunday. While both fighters could level up each other with their stellar wins, the promoters also chased each other pretty well.
Per Ellerbe, they generated more revenue for ‘Tank’ than Hearn did for ‘The Dream’. He ridiculed the Matchroom Promotions for hosting a below-average event for Devin Haney while speaking with Seconds Out. In the same interaction, Leonard Ellerbe vowed to beat Eddie Hearn if they ever cross paths.

He said, “He come 10ft close to me, I’ll smack the s*** out of him in front of everybody. I mean that. I am not gonna play those games, I am not gonna play those games”
“That man just needs to mind his business. Keep my name out of his f***ing mouth and do his job and we good. Listen, if he says something disrespectful to me, I will smack the s*** out of him.”
It makes sense to see a unification fight between Gervonta Davis and Devin Haney. The potential fight will also bring Matchroom-Mayweather Promotions on a parallel level. However, as Haney seems to have finalized a fight against George Kambosos Jr. verbally, ‘The Dream’ vs Davis may not happen immediately.

What will Eddie Hearn do to counter Mayweather Promotions?
Matchroom and Mayweather Promotions are doing pretty well in their respective journeys. Meanwhile, Eddie Hearn’s stable arguably has a better roster. From Devin Haney, Anthony Joshua, to Dillian Whyte, Katie Taylor, and several others, Hearn’s room is full of starfighters. Mayweather Promotions also has a handful of big names.

That said, the US-UK-based promotions can join hands only if they can stage a global blockbuster. Haney and Davis have the potential to do that. However, the American boxers seem to have other plans. Following his win against Isaac Cruz, Gervonta Davis hinted at shifting weight classes if offered the right fights.
Newly crowned unified lightweight champion George Kambosos Jr. has also invited Devin Haney to face him in Australia. As Haney verbally agreed to it, we can finally see the undisputed lightweight title fight come to life.
