Is SNAC Nutrition's controversy a stain on the legacies of Marion Jones and Shane Mosley?

Since the controversy involving Ryan Garcia, Victor Conte and his sports nutrition brand, SNAC, have largely retreated from the spotlight. However, YouTube boxing commentator ShowBizz the Adult isn’t ready to let the issue fade just yet. He took to the platform today to stir up fresh concerns about the company, which Conte founded in 1987.

Let’s rewind to 2005 when Victor Conte served four months in prison for his involvement in the steroid scandal that implicated former world champion Shane Mosley and other prominent athletes. After federal agents raided Conte’s notorious BALCO Laboratories, the scandal ensnared numerous figures, including Olympic track and field star Marion Jones. But today, it’s not Conte’s past that’s under scrutiny; it’s his present. ShowBizz the Adult has brought Jones, Mosley, and Devin Haney into the conversation to make his point.

What is SNAC capable of doing?

The boxing commentator began by introducing Conte, stating, “Victor Conte is the reason why Marion Jones popped dirty, Sugar Shane Mosley popped because of Victor Conte.” However, the biggest problem ShowBizz had with Conte and his sports supplement brand is that the 74-year-old was instrumental in the creation of the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA), an agency that is responsible for drug testing athletes.

Interestingly, Conte himself had acknowledged this in an interview but later changed his statement to claim he only provided consultation after the organization denied he ever helped form the company, which helps collect and analyze samples from boxers for banned substances. Regardless, ShowBizz continued, “What has SNAC kind of shown to be capable of doing, for me is rehydration.”

The boxing commentator used Devin Haney’s example, who promotes the brand, to emphasize how the boxer manages to cut down weight during weigh-ins, to come in for the actual fight looking like a giant. This was especially evident during Haney’s fight against Vasyl Lomachenko last year. ShowBizz even dragged in Demetrius Andrade (also who promotes the brand), who moved up weight classes to fight David Benavidez and looked bigger than Benavidez on fight night.

ShowBizz feels this has led to many questioning, “Dude, how can you allow a guy [Conte] like that not only [to] participate, but sponsor?” The answer to that per ShowBizz is, “But the thing is, Snac never pops.” According to ShowBizz the Adult, Snac’s ability to evade drug tests, despite helping athletes bulk up, is something that warrants questioning. While there’s no proof Conte is still doing what sent him to prison in 2005, that doesn’t mean he is immune to accusations from those within the boxing community. Take the Ryan Garcia thing, for example.

Victor Conte denies Ryan Garcia’s allegations

According to an interview with TMZ Sports in May this year, Victor Conte had denied allegations made by Ryan Garcia that link him to the Victorville native’s failed performance-enhancing drug (PED) test. Garcia, who tested positive for Ostarine, a substance known to enhance athletic performance, suggested that Conte’s ties to VADA may have influenced the test results.

However, Conte, a former figure in the BALCO steroid scandal who now advocates for clean sports, dismissed the claims as baseless. “His conspiracy theory is completely wrong and debunked. I have nothing to do with this. I’m completely independent of VADA,” Conte told TMZ Sports. He further explained that Ostarine, a Selective Androgen Receptor Modulator (SARM), is similar to anabolic steroids, enhancing muscle growth, fat loss, and recovery, but maintained that he played no role in Garcia’s situation.

Having said that, Victor Conte is clearly a controversial personality in the sporting world. However, there’s no evidence of wrongdoing from the former convicted felon in boxing today. Do these allegations have any base? You be the judge of that and let us know in the comments below.
