Is the delay in the Cruz-Valenzuela rematch a strategic move or just boxing politics at play?

On August 3, 2024, Rayo Valenzuela set the boxing world ablaze with his upset victory over Isaac Cruz in a barnburner of a match. The two super lightweight fighters had a sensational match where Rayo came out on top via a Split decision of 116-112, 116-112, and 115-113. After the fight, reports came out that Pitbull had a rematch clause in his contract and rumors started to afloat. However, both these fighters maintained silence regarding the rematch.

Earlier this month, PBC announced the return of Pitbull, but in contrast to the expectations, it was not for his rematch against Valenzuela. Isaac Cruz will fight on the undercard of David Benavidez vs David Morrell against Angel Fierro in an all-Mexican super lightweight duel. This announcement put the rematch in question. However, former Mayweather Promotions CEO, Leonard Ellerbe cleared the air regarding the fight and assured the fans that the fight would still happen.

Ellerbe attended the official press event for the upcoming Benavidez vs Morrell fight. After the conference, KO Artist Sports asked the promoter about the Isaac Cruz vs. Rayo Valenzuela rematch and why it never materialized. Ellerbe stated, “It’s going to happen,” assuring the fans about the rematch.

However, the 59-year-old also implied that finalizing the fight would take time. He stated there is, “nothing wrong with these guys taking interim fights you know in between.” While Pitbull’s fight has already been revealed, El Rayo or his team have not announced his next fight. With Ellerbe stating that both of these fighters will have an interim fight before the eventual rematch, we might have to wait till the end of 2025 to see that.

However, according to Ellerbe, the rematch will happen undoubtedly. “Both are very entertaining Fighters, um, but the plan is for them to get it on,” stated the Washington native. Ellerbe then talked about the much-awaited Benavidez vs Morrell showdown. After a tough 2024, it looks like the Premier Boxing Champions are ready to make their return with this show. The undercard of this show is stacked, which not only has the return of Isaac Cruz but also involves a possible MOTY contender.

Event Of The Year!

The February 1, 2025, event will take place inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. To open the show, Jesus “Mono” Ramos Jr. will take on unified middleweight champion Jeison Rosario in a 10-round fight.

Isaac Cruz will make his return against Angel Fierro, and fans are excited about that. Earlier, the promoters planned for the rematch between Pitbull and El Rayo to take place on this card. However, they changed those plans and postponed the rematch indefinitely.

The co-main event WBC Featherweight Champion Brandon “The Heartbreaker” Figueroa defended his title against Stephen Fulton Jr. in a rematch from 2021. Last time, this duo put on a masterclass where Fulton Jr. came out on top via a majority decision of 116-112, 116-112, 114-114. It was one of the best fights of that year and fans are expecting something similar from these two this time as well.

The main event between David Benavidez and David Morrell also promises intense action, as the animosity is already at its peak between these two. The duo came face-to-face during the promotional shoot of the fight and got into a verbal spat with each other. Both Benavidez and Morrell are excited for the fight and are looking to come out on top to eventually challenge the winner of Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol rematch.
