Canelo Alvarez recently retained his super-middleweight world title after a stellar showdown against Gennady Golovkin. However, he also drew the ire of boxing fans for his comments. Especially after mentioning that he does not wish to fight Mexican boxers. This comment also received criticism from other athletes as well. In fact, Floyd Mayweather recently shared his thoughts on Alvarez’s statements.

Alvarez was in a conversation with ‘FightHype’ when he was in fight camp ahead of his trilogy fight against Golovkin. He was asked if he would be fighting the winner of the Dmitry Bivol vs Gilberto Ramirez fight. Alvarez responded, by saying, “No. If Zurdo (wins), I don’t want to fight with Mexicans. I don’t want to fight with Mexicans and I think Zurdo has a lot of chance to win and I want him to win.”

Meanwhile, FightHype recently had Mayweather over for a telephonic interview. In conversation, Mayweather mentioned that he wished to support young and upcoming fighters. And, as a promoter, he would support fighters irrespective of their age. He said, “A lot of young fighters come from a struggle. You know it don’t matter where it’s from. It could be from Mexico, it could be from anywhere.

He also mentioned that he wishes to help boxers accomplish whatever they wish to accomplish in the sport.

Floyd Mayweather calls out Canelo Alvarez

Floyd Mayweather was not too happy with Canelo Alvarez’s statement about not fighting Mexican fighters. He also called Alvarez out for not taking up a fight with David Benavidez.

Mayweather called him out, saying, “If they put a Canelo, well I don’t. Basically, I don’t want to fight, you know he said I don’t want to fight no Mexican fighters. Canelo made his career off beating Mexican fighters. But now he says you don’t want to fight, you don’t want to take the Benavidez fight. He’s talking about, he don’t want to fight Mexican fighters.”

He also mentioned that if people support Alvarez’s statements. Then fighters from other races would find it okay to not fight each other.
