However, things weren’t looking too promising for The Problem Child before his bout against Ben Askren. In an interview leading up to the fight, Paul made claims that he was experiencing signs of CTE and brain damage. “That’s why when people question my dedication to it, I’m showing up every single day, I’m putting my mental health on the line, my brain is on the line. I’ve gone and gotten brain scans and have early signs of CTE but I love this sport and I wouldn’t trade it for anything else,” said Paul.

Moreover, Paul further expanded on his mental health, recently on the Jim Rome podcast. In the episode, he claimed that he needed boxing to stay mentally healthy. “I need boxing, I need this. It’s in my blood, it’s in my DNA. It’s weird, it doesn’t make any sense how a Disney kid turned into a professional boxer. But it makes every cell in my body feel alive and for me it’s meditation, you know.” He said.
He also stated that he had a host of mental disorders like ADHD and hyperactivity and only found its cure while he was boxing in the gym.

“I have ADHD and a hyperactive brain all types of weird s**t like that. I can’t turn my mind off. However, for 2 hours a day when I’m in the boxing gym, I have one focus and it’s therapy for me.” He added.

Despite Paul’s serious claims, many feel that it is an attempt to gain more attention. This can be further solidified after Paul retracted his previous comments, claiming that he shouldn’t misspeak about such serious conditions.
