Floyd Mayweather has fought the best in the business. The 50-0 boxer has the likes of Canelo Alvarez, Manny Pacquiao, Juan Manuel Márquez, and Oscar De La Hoya among many others in his win column. Winning fifteen titles in four different weight classes, the retired professional boxer cannot be accused of dodging fights against elite boxers of his era. He may have delayed a fight or two for strategic reasons, but dodged an opponent—he never did. But, is the level of competition the same in his exhibition run?
Ahead of Floyd Mayweather’s upcoming rematch against John Gotti III on August 24, the matchup’s broadcaster DAZN is going gung-ho with the marketing. But did the global streaming giant go a bit too far? In its latest Instagram post promoting the event, DAZN posed an innocuous question to the audience, but the usage of Logan Paul’s image caused a furor in the comment section. Was it a clever marketing ploy to build interest in the fight or an oversight? Whatever it was, it provided an excuse for fans to pillory ‘The Maverick’ and DAZN.
Is this a joke on Floyd Mayweather or the rest of ’em?

Until now, Mayweather has fought six exhibition matches and beaten his opponents easily. Looking to continue the streak, Mayweather will be back in the ring again for his rematch against John Gotti III on August 24 at Arena CDMX in Mexico City. Ahead of the event, DAZN’s latest Instagram post caught the attention of fans. “Who is the greatest boxer @floydmayweather has fought?” the post read.
Nothing to worry about until you look at the cover picture used before delving into the options, which included the likes of Canelo Alvarez, Manny Pacquiao, Oscar De La Hoya, Arturo Gatti, and Shane Mosley, among others. It was a still from Mayweather’s exhibition fight against Logan Paul in 2021. To give a bit of context to the magnitude of insult to Floyd’s legacy, the 29-year-old influencer-turned-boxer is yet to win a professional boxing match.

At the Hard Rock Stadium in Florida, the former five-division champion toyed with the YouTube sensation in the eight-round exhibition fight. The only moral victory for Paul was that Mayweather couldn’t knock him out. And we’re doubtful Money Mayweather even tried that. However, to put Logan’s image along with the other boxing greats who fought Mayweather was a bold move for DAZN. But was it placed deliberately? If it was, it worked brilliantly as fans piled on to share their criticism while simultaneously driving up engagement for the post.

Disrespect or a genius bit of marketing?
One user claimed the post was a “brilliant marketing” tactic as it got many boxing fans riled up. Additionally, they stated that it keeps fans in limbo over whether a rematch between Logan Paul and Mayweather could happen. “Putting Logan Paul on the cover was brilliant marketing !!! All the haters are gonna comment , people gonna assume a Logan vs mayweather 2 would happen , all the hype with PRIME and the Paul brothers, and DAZN boxing, the team who runs this marketing is genius,” the comment read.

One fan didn’t mince his words as he pointed out that putting Logan Paul’s photo on the cover was a mark of “disrespect” to the caliber of opponents Floyd faced in his career. They commented, “So yall just blatantly disrespecting by putting Logan Paul up there. Wild”
Another fan also echoed the overwhelming sentiment that using the photo of Floyd Mayweather being “punched on” by Logan Paul was a deceitful representation of how the fight went. Not to mention, Paul doesn’t deserve to be there alongside boxers like Canelo Alvarez, Manny Pacquiao, Ricky Hatton, Shane Mosley, etc. They commented, “See how they being underhanded an disrespectful by placing Logan Paul in their an all the highlight pics is Mayweather getting punched on.”

One fan believed that Oscar De La Hoya and Manny Pacquiao gave Floyd the toughest fights of his professional career. Additionally, they highlighted that Canelo Alvarez was no match for Floyd Mayweather when they both met inside the squared circle in 2013. “In terms of legacy Paquaio, Oscar gave him the best fight, but prime Canelo vs Prime mayweather would be the most interesting, Canelo was to young when Floyd schooled him. Floyd is the TBE tho,” the comment read.
