A blink of an eye. That’s all it used to take to miss out on Mike Tyson’s devastating knockouts during his prime days. The youngest heavyweight champion record holder was untouchable. Although his last exhibition was officially declared a draw, Iron Mike visibly beat Roy Jones Jr. at age 54 in 2020. However, it is not enough for fans to show no concern for their favorite Uncle Mike.
Tyson has battled a multitude of health issues after retiring with a persistent knee injury and chronic back problems. Compounding these challenges, Kid Dynamite suffered a debilitating sciatica flare-up two years ago, which necessitated the use of a wheelchair and cane because of severe pain. But it doesn’t end here. Originally slated to fight in July 2024, the then-57-year-old suffered another medical scare, which led to the postponement of the Jake Paul fight.
Consequently, the state commission has mandated a few medical tests before clearing the now 58-year-old boxing legend. Let’s dive deep into these medical conditions Tyson needs to fulfill for his Netflix showdown.

Texas Commission issues medical conditions for issuing green light for the marquee fight
Traveling from Miami to Los Angeles, Mike Tyson became “nauseous and dizzy due to an ulcer flare-up 30 minutes before landing,” according to boxing legend’s representative. He had to be escorted out in a wheelchair, resulting in a fight postponement from July 20 to November 15, 2024. Akin to the previous Roy Jones Jr. fight, the Brooklyn native will have to pass medical tests amid growing health concerns. According to several reports, the ‘Natural Born Killer‘ will have to pass EEG for Brain Tests and EKG for Heart Tests.
The Texas Department of Licensing will only approve Tyson’s fight with Jake Paul after official doctors’ clearance. These conditions were agreed upon months ago as a safety precaution. Despite this, concerns persist about Tyson’s health, intensified by his recent remarks in a Netflix docuseries.
In response to fan worries, the Texas Commission of Licensing and Regulation issued a statement to alleviate concerns. The commission reaffirmed its commitment to prioritizing fighters’ safety, ensuring Tyson meets all medical requirements before the fight. So what did Tyson say?

Mike Tyson ‘almost died’ after ulcer flare-up
Netflix, with its marketing strategy, released a Showtime Boxing-esque 3-episode docuseries for the Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul fight. While the boxing legend’s representative provided an update on the ulcer flare-up, the extent of its impact was still unknown to the public. However, it became clear when Tyson explained it in detail in the same docuseries.
“I asked the doctor, ‘Am I going to die?’” – said Tyson after a two-and-a-half-inch ulcer was found in his stomach. “I lost 25 pounds in 11 days. Couldn’t eat. Only liquids. Every time I went to the bathroom, it smelled like tar.”

“All my coordination, stamina, everything was hectic getting back. I was peaked already. I could have fought him that day. Now, I got to start from scratch. I had, like, eight blood transfusions. The doctor said I lost half my blood. I almost died.” – concluded the Brooklyn native.
Alerted by Tyson’s comments, the Texas Commission Department of Licensing and Regulation made a statement to World Boxing News. TLDR representative Tela Mange said: “Thorough pre-fight physicals will be conducted by TDLR-appointed physicians, who will discuss Mr Tyson’s medical history with him. Before the event, TDLR will conduct pre-fight physicals to ensure the health of both fighters.”
