Shakur Stevenson became a world champion for the third time last year. Early in April, he secured a knockout against the ranked Shuichiro Yoshino shortly after entering the lightweight division. Later, towards the end of November, he defeated Edwin De Los Santos to grab the vacant WBC belt.
In the interim, the southpaw from Newark made headlines as talks of a fight with Vasyl Lomachenko emerged. But it seems the latter, who suffered a controversial loss to Devin Haney in May, appeared disinterested. The reversal in securing a major fight followed a much-publicized slanging match with Haney over a fight offer. Reportedly unhappy with the split share, Stevenson refused to proceed with the deal. But, in what might have surprised many, Shakur Stevenson has now expressed an interest in fighting a champion from the division that he left not long ago.

Taking to his X/Twitter handle, Shakur Stevenson sought help in tagging Emanuel Navarrete. He didn’t have the details of his X/Twitter account. Sharing how he enjoyed fighting young and unbeaten boxers who, like him, were making strides in the sport, he called out for a significant United States versus Mexico showdown. Stevenson revealed that he was not interested in taking the straightforward path. Hence, he sought the involvement of the WBC and WBO for a championship bout.
“I like fighting the fighters that’s young and undefeated, accomplishing things in the sport like myself. Somebody tag Navarrete cause I don’t know his @ Let’s make a big fight USA vs. Mexico im not into taking the easy route; let’s get the WBC and WBO involved champion,” said Shakur Stevenson.

Interestingly, it would not be the first time that Shakur Stevenson took the Mexican world champion’s name. The latter incidentally pulled a draw against the Brazilian challenger Robson Conceicao as the co-main event on the Stevenson-De Los Santos headline on November 16 at the T-Mobile Arena.
Third time lucky?
So as he stared at the November clash against the Dominican boxer, while speaking with a bunch of reporters on a tentative Navarrete clash, he said, “Seeing that Navarrete is on the undercard, hopefully he can do his thing; I’m gonna do my thing, and it could be a big fight next. I’m willing to fight whoever, whenever. As long as the business is right, I’m ready for it.”
In August, per talkSPORT‘s Michael Benson, the yet-to-be three-division champion, seemed upbeat about a fight with the Mexican champion at a catchweight after the latter defeated Oscar Valdez during his first super featherweight title defense.

One might even go back to June 2022. Benson had revealed that negotiations for a September 23 fight between the young world champion came apart near finalization. Subsequently, Shakur Stevenson went against Robson Conceição for a title defense on September 23. Emanuel Navarrete, on the other hand, fought Eduardo Baez to retain his WBO featherweight title.

Notwithstanding his win over De Los Santos, Shakur Stevenson’s showing at T-Mobile succeeded in garnering hard criticism and a flurry of questions. As things stand, other weighty options in the division available for the Olympic silver medalist remain Gervonta Davis, Raymond Muratalla, George Kambosos Jr., Keyshawn Davis, and Frank Martin. So his sudden quest for a fight against a champion from a weight class where he held the unified championship must be intriguing to many followers.
