Is Gervonta Davis' fight delay a strategic move, or is he just pricing himself out?

For the past few months, boxing fans have been eagerly awaiting Gervonta Davis next fight announcement. Former three-division champion last appeared in action in June where he successfully defended his WBA lightweight championship against Frank Martin. A few months ago, the PBC confirmed that Tank will make his comeback on December 14 against WBA super featherweight champion Lamont Roach Jr. However, the 30-0 boxer revealed a few weeks ago that the fight had been postponed the fight until January. If only that were it.

Plans once again changed and PBC revealed that the event was now being finalized for March 1, 2025, on PBC’s Amazon Prime Video pay-per-view. Later, Matchroom Boxing honcho Eddie Hearn contended that he believed that these constant changes had put the fight in jeopardy of not happening. He further stated that the reason behind these constant changes is the amount of money that the PBC is offering to Gervonta Davis, which is making the event unfeasible. However, former Mayweather Promotions CEO, Leonard Ellerbe dismissed Hearn’s claims and assured the fans that the fight would happen.

In an interview with K.O. Artist Sports, Ellerbe set the record straight and dismissed the claims made by Eddie Hearn. Ellerbe was wondering how the Matchroom Honcho would know the purse that the PBC is offering to both fighters. “How would he know what the Lamont Roach purse? That’s all BS,” stated the 59-year-old bluntly. However, he made it clear that he does not hold any grudge towards Eddie Hearn.

“I’m trying to take a different kind of approach with things,” stated Ellerbe. For those who are not privy to the inner workings of the PBC, Al Haymon, who owns the PBC, was Mayweather’s manager for a very long time. Therefore, Ellerbe shares a good relationship with Haymon and is an important part and adviser to the PBC.

Ellerbe kept a respectful tone throughout the conversation and stated that Hearn “is uninformed,” and assured the fans that the fight would happen regardless of the current hiccups. “The bottom line is that we’re getting those two together and expecting an announcement,” soon enough. He also added that the fans will have to wait a bit more for the official announcement of the fight.

However, Hearn’s claims did not come out of nowhere, as there have been clouds of uncertainty roaming over this fight for months now. Furthermore, the silence maintained by the PBC over the event has further fueled the rumors of the fight being in jeopardy. Forcing Hearn, who has been a supporter of Gervonta Davis in the past, to make his statement.

Last month, Eddie Hearn came out and stated that the reason why the Gervonta Davis-Lamont Roach Jr. fight might not have happened was because of the purse. According to Hearn, the PBC is offering Tank a lower amount of sum than his last fight against Frank Martin, making the latter reluctant to accept the offer.

However, the 45-year-old made it clear that it is his opinion and no one else’s. “This is my opinion. Gervonta Davis makes a lot of money. He makes a lot of money because he does big fights, and he’s been doing big pay-per-views.” According to Hearn, the upcoming fight against Lamont Roach Jr. is not a big enough draw that make Tank the money that he wants. “Then he fights Lamont Roach, and although it’s not a bad fight, he’s going to bomb at the PPV, everywhere in terms of what he’s been doing,” stated Hearn.

Hearn also referenced the offer he made to Gervonta Davis a while back to fight Conor Benn. Reportedly, Matchroom Boxing offered Tank $15 million for that fight. However, the 30-0 boxer declined the fight. Hearn believes that the offer is still lingering in Davis’ mind and if the PBC can’t match that offer, he probably won’t fight.

However, Ellerbe has set the record straight and also mentioned that the purse is not an issue. This means that Tank might still be earning a considerable purse no matter the PPV numbers. And now that Ellerbe has confirmed that the fight will happen, we will get more details regarding the purse and venue very soon.
