Santa Cruz says he specifically wanted to fight Gervonta Davis. He goes to explain why by saying, “People were saying that I’m afraid to fight big names, big opponents.” The Mexican elaborated, “Who better than fight Gervonta Davis to prove them wrong? I’m here to fight the best, and now I’m showing it by fighting him. I asked for this fight for a reason and I’m going to go out there and try to prove them wrong.”
Santa Cruz is no stranger to the big name fights. His only career defeat came against Carl Frampton, and in the re-match, Santa Cruz got his revenge. The Mexican also beat Abner Mares after a dominating performance. However, Santa Cruz was full of respect for his opponent.
He said, “I think this is my biggest fight against Gervonta Davis. He’s a great fighter, a rising superstar, he has sparred regularly with welterweights to prepare.” He goes on to add that the 95% knockout rate of Davis makes it a very difficult fight for him.
Leo Santa Cruz wants Gary Russell next
Santa Cruz also gave an update on his next fight. “Davis is the fight that could get made. If I get this win against Gervonta Davis, I want to fight Gary Russell next.”
Speaking on how the fight will pan out, Santa Cruz is confident in his experience. He refers to the fact that he has never legitimately been knocked down or knocked out, reiterating that he will beat Davis via decision.

“The way I see it playing out is it going all 12 rounds and me beating him on a decision, I’m going to be really smart and not get caught with his big punches. The only way he’s going to beat me is if he knocks me out because I’m going to be on top of him throwing a lot of punches, using my experience from the outside. I’m going to do all kinds of things. Once I’m up there in the ring, I’m going to win the fight. But I see myself winning a 12-round decision.”
