It’s been over two years since Canelo Alvarez knocked out an opponent. But the unanimous victory over Jermell Charlo last Saturday proved that he doesn’t need an early stoppage to stamp his legacy. The loss to Dmitry Bivol and then the performances against Gennady Golovkin and John Ryder probably raised doubts in many minds about the 33-year-old sitting on a rickety throne. However, the resounding win at T-Mobile Arena should be enough to force a shift in the oft-repeated narrative of an ebbing Alvarez.

Interestingly, the Charlo triumph seems to have brought in a couple of supporters looking for that spark, that light to lead them on. And their jubilation knew no bounds when, on September 30, after 12 rounds of aggressively hemming the ‘Iron Man,’ the judges’ scorecard read 119-109, 118-109, and 118-109. Among those who called out the naysayers was Lou DiBella.

Lou DiBella reminds naysayers of Canelo’s resume

The 63-year-old ace promoter currently takes care of Regis Prograis and George Kambosos Jr., among others. On his X account, he wrote that he fails to understand how so many fans, followers, and pundits refuse to recognize Canelo Alvarez’s talent and consider him great. Terming it baffling, Di Bella highlighted that the Mexican icon’s resume makes a strong case.

It should be highlighted that in Jermell Charlo, Canelo Alvarez fought his twenty-second world champion opponent. As far as the world title contentions are concerned, his record stands at 20-2-1. He has won belts from Light Middleweight to Middleweight and then Super Middleweight to Light heavyweight. More so, it should be noted that he is only thirty-three. He is in excellent physical condition and appears capable enough to continue fighting for another five years.

The Cinnamon still smells strong!

His victory over John Ryder did not exactly set the world on fire. It sparked rumors of him slipping. But it would do good to remember that Canelo Alvarez came to the fight after a 7-month break. It was primarily triggered by a hand injury that required surgery. Yes, the blot of defeats at the hands of Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Dmitry Bivol may forever mar his resume. However, it barely begs for any explanation. The losses happened to two outstanding boxers standing at the top of the game!

Besides, the number of call-outs he receives, in many ways, establishes the validity of Alvarez’s credentials. Alongside David Benavidez and Terence Crawford, Chris Eubank Jr. seems to have joined the queue as well.
