Laila Ali, the daughter of boxing legend Muhammad Ali came out swinging against the fashion brand Balenciaga. The brand has been facing backlash after releasing a controversial campaign that displayed children in an ‘inappropriate way’.

Balenciaga released an advert that featured children holding teddy bears dressed in bondage gear. The ad campaign also featured little girls and bondage-themed toys, making them the center of controversy. Moreover, several photos from the campaign also showcased the two young children standing on beds.

Laila Ali rips into Balenciaga for their latest campaign

Ali was not happy like many and decided to share her voice on social media. She went on to share a video of a photographer who gave his insight on the campaign. In the video, he claimed that using children in campaigns like this was unacceptable and ‘abhorrent’. Ali shared this video on her story and also ripped into the fashion brand.

“Well, they thought folks will be okay with this b/c many folks have already gone with most everything that is blatantly aimed towards specializing children and pressuring everyone to accept. PROTECT THE CHILDEREN,” she wrote.

The former champion was certainly not afraid of calling out the luxury brand for their ad campaign. Moreover, she is not the only one,  many celebrities and actors are also criticizing Balenciaga for crossing a line with this campaign.

Balenciaga issues an apology for their campaign

Following the backlash, the brand decided to issue an apology for the campaign with a statement released on their Instagram account with a story that apologized for the misuse of children in their ads.

“We apologize for displaying unsettling documents in our campaign. We take this matter very seriously and are taking legal action against the parties responsible for creating the set and including unapproved items for our Spring 23 campaign photoshoot, We strongly condemn the abuse of children in any form, We stand for children’s safety and well-being,” the statement read

It looks like the brand succumbed to public pressure and was forced to release an apology. This kind of controversial campaign is not new to the luxury brand. However, with the political climate, today’s brands need to realize the boundaries they can push while making their campaigns. In addition, this campaign was certainly on the wrong side of the creative spectrum and was quickly called out on it.
