Gervonta Davis is regarded as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world currently. With an undefeated record of 30 wins(28 via knockout), the Baltimore native has won world championships in three divisions. As Davis is only 30 years old at the moment, fans expected him to be in action for a long time. The WBA lightweight champion has lately come under scrutiny for choosing easy fights and avoiding legitimate challengers. But considering his age, fans expected those fights to happen somewhere down the road.

However, during the official presser for his fight with Lamont Roach Jr. a few days ago, Tank made a shocking announcement claiming that he is considering retiring next year. The announcement sent shockwaves down the boxing community. Fans started wondering about the legacy that the Baltimore native will leave if he retires at this point. Well, boxing legend Bernard Hopkins reflected on Tank’s career so far and where he ranks amongst the greats at the moment.

Gervonta Davis and his legacy

In a conversation with FightHubTV, the former undisputed middleweight champion claimed that it would be cruel to draw parallels between Gervonta Davis’ career to the past-time greats. According to Hopkins, “his legacy would be in his time, which he needed to be respected for.”

Hopkins further stated that the 30-0 has achieved everything that “most of the greats did in their time.” He has won championships across weight divisions, has remained undefeated, and is one of the best pound-for-pound boxers of the current generation. For that, he should be considered a first ballot, “Hall of Famer.” ‘The Executioner’ believes that IBHOF should induct Tank into HOF as soon as he retires.

However, Hopkins acknowledged the fact that Gervonta Davis has never fought against the likes of Shakur Stevenson or Devin Haney. According to the former two-division champion, it doesn’t matter. “As far as his era, which was loaded with fighters and fights which could have happened but didn’t. Every era has that same situation. I don’t think that’s ever going to go away. Or ever would be something dismissed from eras of conversation,” explained Bernard Hopkins. He implied that it is not a new thing and that missed opportunities exist in every timeline for every fighter. However, that should not be the basis for disregarding someone’s achievements.

Nevertheless, the 59-year-old is not completely sold on the idea of Gervonta Davis actually retiring. He thinks that the Baltimore native is too young and is hoping for him to change his mind.

Bernard Hopkins hoping for a change

Hopkins claimed that even though he would miss so many sensational fights by retiring so early, he wouldn’t judge him for that. “I think Tank Davis, you know, understands his path and gonna go by what he feels. Hey, he’s young still,” contended Hopkins.

However, the Philadelphia native is hoping that Gervonta Davis changes his mind. However, if that does not happen, he wants Tank to do something sensational that will put a stop to all the scrutiny. “Might change his mind, who knows. Something might happen in the next one or two fights where there’s an automatic repeat or rewind of something spectacular on his way out,” stated Hopkins in a hopeful tone.

Gervonta Davis has claimed that he would earn as much money as he could from boxing before hanging up the gloves next year. This again implies that the Baltimore native will go for a big payday rather than face a legitimate challenger. But who knows? Things could always change.
