Living up to the values upheld by ‘The Greatest’ is no small feat. Muhammad Ali will always remain synonymous with boxing. However, it was his love for humanity that made him one of the most beloved figures of the past century. Just ten days ago, the boxing world celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of Ali’s historical ‘Rumble in the Jungle’ fight against George Foreman. Though the ‘Sportsman of the Century’ is no longer with us, his legacy continues to inspire.
Each year, the Muhammad Ali Center in his hometown, Louisville, selects individuals who not only believed in Ali’s values but actively followed his path. In 2024, NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal was awarded the prestigious Muhammad Ali Humanitarian of the Year honor. The award recognized O’Neal for his outstanding contributions beyond the court. It’s been over a decade since the 15-time NBA All-Star retired. Nevertheless, the living legend has continued to uplift communities across the country through his foundation.
Acknowledging Shaquille O’Neal’s efforts and impact as a compassionate leader and advocate for social issues, the Muhammad Ali Center’s message read, “This weekend’s event celebrated incredible individuals who embody Ali’s commitment to making a difference, with Shaquille O’Neal recognized as the 2024 Humanitarian of the Year.”

The Instagram post featured a slew of photographs from the event. One showed Shaquille O’Neal standing beside Ms. Lonnie Ali. Along with O’Neal, several other prominent figures were honored. Lawyer and activist Bryan Stevenson received the Lifetime Achievement Award. Musician and composer Nile Rodgers was honored with the Global Citizenship Award.
In addition to the main honoree, the Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Awards celebrate six young adults—who are thirty and under. They are recognized for their impactful work as ‘advocates, activists, and role models’. They are honored for exemplifying Muhammad Ali’s ‘six core principles: confidence, conviction, dedication, giving, respect, and spirituality.
The Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Awards (MAHA) were established in 2013. The objective was to honor the boxing great’s lifelong commitment to helping others and to recognize young leaders making positive changes. This event is held every year. The Center’s portal mentions, “The annual MAHA ceremony is the Ali Center’s primary fundraiser, with proceeds going to support the Center’s mission-based programs, community events, impactful partnerships, digital content, and museum exhibitions.”
