Everyone’s talking about Gervonta Davis lately—but not for the right reasons! The Baltimore native had a close encounter with his first career loss against Lamont Roach Jr. last Saturday night. In fact, many in the community felt Roach was robbed when the fight was declared a majority decision draw, especially because of the unpunished knee incident.

As all of y’all might know by now, Davis surprisingly took a knee in the ninth round after Roach landed a perfect counter. The referee Steve Willis even started a mandatory 10-count, but Davis ran over to his corner to get his face wiped with a towel. This led to the move going unpunished even though the rules dictate, it should have been scored as a knockdown.

During the post-fight interview, the 30-year-old claimed grease in his hair had dripped down to his eye, making it difficult for him to see. However, fans and experts saw it for what it was. A bad excuse, with many raising their voices on social media. Even Davis’ hairstylist came out of the woodwork to condemn him for blaming her work as the reason he took a knee.

I did his hair WEDNESDAY, It’s SATURDAY! He did press, gym and weigh in. That’s no excuse, how much grease did I use damn,” she said according to reports. Now, the New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC) is getting involved in the matter. They have claimed they will review the incident to maintain integrity in the sport.

Meanwhile, Lamont Roach Jr. has slammed Davis while condemning the knee incident. “I’m happy with my performance for sure,” Roach Jr. told Boxing News. “I’m just a little frustrated with the scorecards. I thought I should have won. And I thought I should have won a competitive fight. I think I did what I needed to do necessary to bank the rounds.”

“And even without the knee, that should have been a knockdown. So I don’t think there is any excuse for me not to win…  But that’s just how to cookie a crumble,” he added. Roach later noted, “When I [saw] the ref start counting, I was like, continue, why’d you stop? You know?” He went on to describe what exactly happened during the incident.

“There was an exchange where he threw a left hand, you know, he hit me a little bit. I rolled it, came back with a right hand, and I hit him, landed a jab, and he took a knee. So even if he did, had to wipe his eye, whatever the case may be, that’s a rookie mistake. Don’t do that. That’s a knockdown.”

It’s worth noting that Gervonta Davis is known for throwing very few punches in a round, recording the second-lowest punch output per round, just above Zhilei Zhang. Regardless, he continued, “I get it though, I shouldn’t have done that but that hair grease was burning my eyes!” This was a big mistake from Davis, and he got ‘community noted’ for it.
