No one enjoys being overshadowed by a competitor. And Lamont Roach Jr. knows this all too well. As he gears up for his 12-round battle with Gervonta Davis on March 1st at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, many see Roach as nothing more than a stepping stone. Davis will put his WBA Lightweight title on the line, and if Roach manages to snatch it, it would send shockwaves through the boxing world. But is that really going to happen? Who knows? But don’t count Roach out just yet. He might not be the easy walkover some are expecting. He could have a secret weapon up his sleeve.
Enter Bruce Carrington. He’s sparred with Gervonta Davis, and, ahead of the March showdown, he believes Lamont Roach has one thing going for him that Tank’s other opponents didn’t. Not long ago, Carrington sat down with FightHype.com and dropped a potential game-changer that could give Lamont Roach Jr. a leg up. But will it truly tip the scales in his favor, or is it just wishful thinking?

History may show the way for Lamont Roach against Gervonta Davis
In the conversation, the reporter asked Bruce Carrington about the March fight. Carrington started by comparing it to a scenario where a well-known champion fights their sparring partner—someone who may not have a big name but still knows the champion’s weaknesses from working with them in the past. To further make things clearer, he brought up the example of Vasyl Lomachenko vs. Jamaine Ortiz, where the latter gave the IBF World lightweight champion a tough fight during their December 2022 fight despite not being a huge name.

Carrington believed that because Roach already fought Gervonta Davis in 2011 twice in the amateurs, he might be able to recognize things about Tank’s style that other fighters can’t. “Like maybe little quirks. Or body language that ‘oh he’s hurt right there and okay when he does this, that kinda bothers him,’ that other people might not be able to read,” the 27-year-old undefeated boxer stated.
Even though Carrington doesn’t believe Roach has the power to keep Tank off him for the entire 12 rounds, he still believes that Roach’s style could be a good match for Tank. Moreover, he predicted, “Tank stops him probably in the mid to later rounds”. Not just that, “I think he’s gonna be more like counter-punching, boxing a little, being sharp and then flip the switch,” Bruce Carrington added.

Lamont Roach Jr. preparing to be “the new”
The Washington native is not just there to make up the numbers. These two have history, with Gervonta Davis getting the better of Roach back in 2011. However, Roach isn’t one to just lie down and let his opponent walk over him.
He even dropped a little Valentine’s Day rhyme on X, saying, “Roses are red, violets are blue, March 1st sounds like AND THE NEW 🥰.” Sounds confident, right? But the Baltimore native wasn’t having it and responded with his own twist, saying, “Roses are red, violets are blue, March 1st sounds like ‘don’t worry baby…you’ll be home soon’ from the hospital, mf!” Of course, he deleted the post soon after.

This back-and-forth has got people talking, and it’s clear that Roach is fired up. Even though a lot of people, like Terence Crawford, aren’t convinced Roach has the toughness to hang with Tank, Roach is still confident. He’s moving up to 135 lbs for this fight and is ready to bring “smoke” to the ring. “I’m really him,” Roach said in a self-recorded video. “I bring any type of smoke to anything in my way. I am him in that ring,” the Washington native confidently stated. It seems like he’s been working hard in the gym, training relentlessly, and preparing for the challenge of a lifetime.
So, do you think Roach can dethrone Gervonta Davis? Or will the undefeated champ prove too much for him?
