At just 25 years old, Keyshawn Davis has already achieved more in his boxing career than many fighters could only dream of. Since turning professional in 2021, he has compiled an impressive record, with 12 fights under his belt—eight of which ended in knockout victories. His debut was nothing short of spectacular, as he delivered a stunning second-round knockout against Lester Brown at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens. Most recently, Davis showcased his dominance once again, securing a knockout win over Gustavo Daniel Lemos at the Scope Arena in Norfolk.

With this victory, he claimed the IBF Inter-Continental Light, WBC USA Light, and WBO Inter-Continental Light titles, further cementing his status as one of boxing’s most electrifying prospects. But this victory is just one part of Keyshawn Davis’ remarkable story in the ring. Davis is up for a Valentine’s Fight Night against the WBO lightweight champion, Denys Berinchyk at the Theater in Madison Square Garden. This marks his first step towards a world title.

With a decorated amateur career, it’s clear that Davis is a rising prospect in light division boxing. But what truly sets him apart? It’s the nickname “The Businessman”. Let’s explore why Davis earned this unique moniker and how it has become synonymous with his approach to boxing.

Why is Keyshawn Davis called ‘The Businessman’?

As Keyshawn Davis continues to evolve in his career, his nickname “The Businessman” reflects his disciplined approach to boxing. Davis takes his job seriously, often expressing that he’s in no rush to climb the ranks. “I haven’t even reached my full body strength yet”, he said. “I’m enjoying boxing right now. I’m not rushing nothing,” the Norfolk native stated while talking to 13 News Now. Instead, he remains focused on steadily building his skills and waiting for the right moment to strike. Just like how a successful business tycoon would strategize his moves.

Reflecting on his 2022 knockout victory against Omar Tienda, Davis revealed, “He was the first opponent in the ring that was actually talking junk to me. He actually came backstage after the fight was over and he told me ‘Wow you’re really a good fighter.'” Keyshawn Davis doesn’t allow outside distractions to interfere with his performance. He lets his skills speak for themselves. His strategic mindset is part of what makes him so dangerous in the ring. And it’s one of the reasons he’s earned the nickname “The Businessman.”

The nickname is also a nod to Davis’ ambition. Why? Because he had been eying to face top fighters in the division like Gervonta Davis, Vasily Lomachenko, and Teofimo Lopez. “I don’t feel like no fighter at 135 goes the distance with me,” said Keyshawn in an interview with Boxing News 24/7.

But it doesn’t end here. “If not Tank, I’d go for Raymond Muratalla,” said Keyshawn in the same interview. Davis knows that if he wants to become a champion, he must approach each fight with a professional mindset—hence the “business” aspect of his nickname.

Keyshawn Davis’ early life and background

Keyshawn Davis’ journey to the top of the boxing world began long before his professional debut. Growing up in Norfolk, Virginia, Davis had an affinity for boxing from a young age. He earned multiple accolades in amateur boxing, which includes silver medals from the 2019 Pan American Games, the 2019 World Championships, and the 2020 Summer Olympics. And you know what? It was at the Olympics that Keyshawn Davis cemented his place as one of the top lightweight contenders. Not just that. The 25-year-old also took home a silver medal after an intense bout with Cuba’s Andy Cruz in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games Final.

Despite the setback of losing to the 5-0 boxer by a split decision in the final bout, Davis remained proud of his performance. “I feel like it was a great fight. I ain’t really get to watch it. It was moving so fast… But I felt like it was a 3-2 decision, it was a good technical fight, I think the fans loved it.” Davis reflected while talking to 13 News Now.

Upon returning to Norfolk after the Olympics, the city celebrated him as a hero. “Shoutout to my city. Shoutout to Norfolk Virginia. Y’all have been showing me love the entire Olympics,” the 12-0, 8 KO boxer thanked his family and community.

Keyshawn Davis too has embraced the opportunity to give back to his community. He’s made it a point to speak to kids and visit detention centers. He even made a partnership with his sister’s nonprofit to give away backpacks filled with school supplies. As Davis continues his journey, it’s clear that the nickname “The Businessman” is more than just a catchy moniker.
