After losing their respective world titles in their latest outings, Keith Thurman and Mario Barrios will square off on February 5 at the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas to resurrect themselves in the current championship motion.

Both men were undefeated before suffering their maiden losses against A-listed opponents in Manny Pacquiao (2019) and Gervonta Davis (2021). While it took Thurman more than two years to return from the defeat, Barrios will be returning to action after seven months post his loss against ‘Tank’ Davis.

On attaining the win, either of the former champions will be back to the title race. This can impose a welterweight slugfest on the display. While we stand hours from seeing both men collide, here’s a look at the statistics that cite the upcoming bout to be a 50-50 matchup.

Keith Thurman vs Mario Barrios: Record and knockouts

In an active career of 15 years, Thurman has appeared in 30 fights, amassing a record of 29-1. It means he has fought twice/year on average. While he won almost all of them, 22 of those wins came via stoppage. This reflects ‘One Time’ Thurman’s sheer ability as a knockout artist at 147 lbs. That said, Barrios has been way more active than Keith Thurman and has climbed the ladders to the world championship quicker.

‘El Azteca’ Barrios isn’t even a decade old for pro-boxing. He has already tasted gold at 140 lbs and holds an active record of 26-1 with 17 knockouts in his favor. But his only defeat to Gervonta Davis has also come via TKO from ‘Tank’. While Thurman has never been stopped as a pro, Barrios may have to struggle to find his way. Besides, Barrios will debut at 147 lbs, which is Thurman’s natural weight. So, ‘El Azteca’ cannot sleep on his rival.

Physical Parameters- Age, Height, Reach, Weight, and Stance

The 33-year-old Thurman will relinquish years of ring rust against 26-year-old Barrios. Apart from the youth privilege, Barrios will have a mere high advantage. A 5’10″ tall Barrios can make it to use in the fight against a slightly shorter (5′ 9½″) Keith Thurman. That said, both men share the common orthodox stance.

Thus, they may be familiar with each other’s fighting style, which makes the matchup more alluring. As we continue to note about Thurman’s and Barrios’s knockout power, they are also capable of going the distance. On scrutinizing all these factors, it gets tougher to predict the outcome of the fight.

Neither of the former champions has a very strong game on social media. But Thurman beats Barrios as of now. Having fought Manny Pacquiao in 2019, ‘One Time’ lost his invincible aura but grabbed some serious attention. He currently has 320K Instagram followers and 111.6K Twitter followers.

On the contrary, Mario Barrios has 112 k followers on Instagram and a mere over 9K on Twitter. Well, the youngster can surely rake these numbers by getting a win against Keith Thurman. In this limited time, however, both the former champions have become millionaires.
