Jermall Charlo has remained absent from the boxing space since June 2021. This absence has heavily been felt by the boxing realm. It has prompted folks to wonder when he would be back to show the world his prowess. Referred to as an unavoidable absence by WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman, this prolonged period has surely caused a dent in his boxing career. But his well-being is above everything.
After a prolonged absence following an injury and then a mental health episode, people have been expecting him to make a comeback. A while ago his name emerged once again when reports of him clashing with p4p fighter Canelo Alvarez emerged. However, that soon collapsed. Recently, however, Charlo has hinted that he may be returning to the ring. For his fresh start in the sport, he’s also found a coach befitting his caliber- Roy Jones Jr.

Through it all: Jermall Charlo thanks his coach Roy Jones Jr.
Early this month the star trainer revealed that he is training ‘Hitman The Future of Boxing’ Charlo. The trainer seems like an apt choice for the older Charlo brother. Jones has a diverse portfolio of fighters under his guidance. The coach was infamously associated with Chris Eubank Jr. before they drifted apart in the wake of the fighter registering a loss against Liam Smith.
Now, Charlo being his focus, the trainer said, “The hardest thing is to teach him and buy into the different things that you’re teaching. Because when someone’s used to winning a certain way, they want to stick with that way, but it’s going really well. I think his mind got a little sidetracked and he got off the right path for a minute. My goal is to get him back on the right path because when he’s on the right path, he’s a monster and hard to beat.”
A tremendous source of support and inspiration by his side, Charlo feels confident to enter the ring once again. And he heavily contributes this to his coach. In a video in which the fighter can be seen fishing along with Jones, he wrote, “I been rushing life for too long… I keep learning these lessons. @royjonesjroffical keep mentoring me.” Jones can be heard in the background outlining ways in which he can catch a big fish. Interestingly, also symbolic of the ways he’s mentoring Charlo to excel in the ring as he re-ventures into it.
Jermall was poised to face Canelo for the upcoming fight but was soon dropped. In a bit to clash against Canelo, the younger brother Jermell announced that he would go up two weight classes. As he prepares for this massive undertaking, he has spoken about his brother’s comeback to the sport.

Jermell Charlo breaks his silence on his brother’s comeback
In a recent podcast, ‘Iron Man’ Charlo said that he remains unsure if his brother would be able to reach the pinnacle he was at before he temporarily retired from the ring. He said, “Man, you know, truthfully, I really don’t know if he’ll (bounce back).”
Speaking about his dynamics with his brother, he added, “I really don’t know, like cuz I’m not in his household. I don’t talk to him every day. You know, we kinda get into it like every other year, every year sometime. You know, we just never really seen eye to eye on certain things.” However, still supporting his older brother, the ‘Iron Man’ said, “I hope he bounce back. He got a family to feed, got a lotta children he gotta take care of and he got bills to pay and a life to live.”
