Will Serrano and Taylor's trilogy redefine women's boxing with 12-3 rounds, or is it just hype?

Just a few days from now, on November 15, Amanda Serrano will face the undisputed super lightweight champion Katie Taylor in a rerun of their historic first match at the Madison Square Garden in April 2022. The rematch at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, which will serve as the co-main event for the Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul fight, will see both of these boxers receive the largest payday in the history of women’s boxing. But they are not done with the rematch. They are now already looking past Friday.

Even though the undisputed title fight will remain the co-main of the show, this match between old rivals will be the real show stealer for most boxing purists. The two women, however, want more and are pushing for a third fight in their hit series with a condition that might cheer every boxing fan. Ahead of the match, they sat down for a face-to-face interview hosted by MVP and opened up about various things. One of the things they spoke about was why this match was a 2-minute-10-round fight despite Amanda Serrano’s involvement. For those who may not know. Here is a bit of context.

In a historic step for women’s boxing, Amanda Serrano fought Danila Ramos on October 27, 2023, in Orlando, Florida, in a match scheduled for 12 rounds with three minutes each, mirroring the standard for men’s championship bouts. Serrano, a seven-division champion and the undisputed featherweight titleholder had long advocated for this format, viewing it as a way to promote equality in the sport.

The fight was a mandatory defense of her WBO, WBA, and IBF belts but excluded the WBC title after the organization declined to sanction the 12-round format, citing safety concerns. Consequently, Serrano vacated her WBC belt in protest, reinforcing her stance for parity in fight conditions between men and women. However, things changed when the Katie Taylor rematch came a-knocking.

While answering Cam’ron’s question about their rematch being 2-minute-10-rounds, Serrano replied that she initially wanted their first fight to be 12 rounds of 3 minutes each. “Honestly, the first fight, I wanted a 12-3 minute rounds. And I was very vocal about that,” explained The Real Deal.

The Puerto Rican explained how she pushed for a 12-3 minute round fight in 2022, but her opponent’s team refused to entertain the idea. She stated, “When we went to negotiations with her(Katie Taylor) team. You might not know when Jordan Maldonado, which is my manager, he does his negotiations in front of me on speaker, and when he spoke to your team, it was adamant that it had to be 10-2.”

Serrano might have failed to convince Taylor’s team, but she did not miss this opportunity and pushed the idea for a trilogy in a 12-3 minute format in front of the Bray native herself. “Maybe when you want your belts back, maybe we can do it 12-3,” stated the 47-2-1 boxer.

Surprisingly, it did not take much convincing, as Katie Taylor immediately agreed to a third match and even talked about how this format would suit her better.

Firstly, the 23-1 boxer agreed that a 3-minute round match is always better for a boxer. “Yeah absolutely. I actually don’t mind doing the three-minute rounds myself. I think the three-minute rounds actually suit the boxer more than a fighter,” stated Taylor, referring to their different fighting styles.

Then she immediately made it clear that she had no idea about the negotiations between their teams and simply signed the contract. But implied the fact that had she known this idea was on the table, she would have agreed to it immediately as “12-3 minute rounds would actually suit me better.”

Without missing a beat, Amanda Serrano pushed the idea of having a third match in the series. According to the unified featherweight champion, “It’s amazing to have a great dance partner,” and according to her, a 12-3 minute fight would prove to the world what women can do. They immediately agreed to the terms and shook on it.

Katie Taylor was then asked whether she would be ready for a third match if she won the match this Friday. The Irish boxer stated that she would do a trilogy regardless if she wins the rematch because the trilogy will be different with 12 3-minute rounds and it would be against Amanda Serrano.

While these women are ready to steal the show in Texas, they are already thinking about the future. The trilogy of this rivalry will surely be a treat for the fans and no other fight deserves a 3-minute-12-round match than this.
