If not for his father, Joseph Diaz Jr. could have missed being a world champion pugilist. ‘JoJo’ had intended to become a baseball player when he was a child. However, as his father wanted to hone him to be able to defend himself from bullies, he took him to the boxing gym.
However, he became extremely skillful at the gym and looked impressive. That’s when the gym administrators took him as a full-timer. And today, ‘JoJo’ is close to becoming a two-division world titlist.
Joseph Diaz Sr. has been one of the prime pillars of support behind his son’s success. When ‘JoJo’ was merely 10 or 11, his father accompanied him to the South El Monte Teamsters Youth Boxing Club in California. Everything changed after that. In a chat with ESPN, Joseph Diaz Sr. had discussed the bond he shares with his son.

Joseph Diaz Sr. said, “He ended up sparring a couple kids, and one kid he sparred, he made him bleed and stuff like that. After that, he got hooked. It kind of backfired on me a little bit.
“I thought he would go in there and get beat up a little bit and not want to do this [too seriously] and just want to go in there and train. But he ended up making some kids bleed and beat some kids up.”

Joseph Diaz is on the brink of lightweight glory

In less than a decade, Diaz has appeared 34 times in the ring. That means he has accepted more than 3 fights per year on average. This sheer activeness clearly puts him in a top-tier slot. Having secured the super featherweight title in the past, ‘JoJo‘ is now targeting the 135 lbs title. He is not very far from achieving that and has already bagged the Interim WBC strap.
Well, the upcoming ride will demand more from him. His father, Joseph Diaz Sr. is still his prime coach and has been backing his son all throughout. It will be interesting to see whether he can accompany him to successfully become a 2 division world champion.
