It’s been five months since the legendary Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul showdown. But everything about that fight was huge—the status of both fighters, the age gap, and the jaw-dropping revenue. Despite the uninteresting nature of the actual fight, the event itself was a pure spectacle. Naturally, even months later, fresh takes and new updates about the fight keep bubbling up. And the latest take came from an episode of the Joe Rogan Experience (#2292), when the UFC commentator sat down with chess prodigy and martial artist Josh Waitzkin. While the two were deep in conversation about Josh’s journey through chess and competition, an unexpected but fascinating take on Tyson and the fight emerged.

Waitzkin kicked things off by making a really sharp point: “If you win too fast, too young,” it can actually mess with your head. According to the chess prodigy, you start developing this fragile relationship with success, like you expect everything to come easy forever. And when that happens, “You don’t realize that getting your a– kicked is a huge part of the journey.”

Joe Rogan jumped in, agreeing with Waitzkin’s point. He pointed out that a lot of naturally talented fighters run into this same wall. They’re so gifted—“whether it’s a speed advantage, a strength advantage,”—that they never have to dig deep and build real discipline. And according to Joe Rogan, when you don’t have to grind, you don’t truly develop into something great. The 57-year-old even mentioned how much “genetics plays such a large part in martial arts success.” And when you happen to be blessed with elite genes and a strong mind and insane discipline, “then you get a Mike Tyson”—the total package.

Josh Waitzkin nodded and stated, “That’s amazing if you can have that combination. That’s what you’re looking for.” But then Joe Rogan added, “If you don’t have that and Mike Tyson is competing your division you’re fu—d.” According to UFC commentator, you can work as hard as you want, have the best mindset in the world, but genetics, coaching, timing—all those outside factors—still matter. They can make a difference.

Even though Mike Tyson had it all, it still wasn’t enough to overcome the younger, inexperienced Jake Paul. The age gap was simply too big to ignore, and in the end, Tyson fell short by unanimous decision despite Paul being the lesser of the two individuals in terms of genetics, speed, discipline, and strength. When it comes to the fight game, you may have it all, but in the end, it’s a young man’s game. You can reach a point where even a novice can defeat Mike Tyson. But don’t count Jake Paul out just yet. He is still growing. If you ask his biggest supporter—his mom—she definitely has a few things to get off her chest.

Jake Paul’s mom is angry at the haters

On a recent episode of Impaulsive, Mike Majlak, seemingly curious about Jake Paul’s next opponent, asked, “How old is he?” The Problem Child’s mom, Pamela Ann Stepnick, replied, “He’s 39.” Cue some laughs—the guys joked that at 39, Chavez Jr. was creeping closer to Mike Tyson’s age bracket. But then Logan Paul got serious and turned to his mom, asking, “What do you think about it [the fight], Ma?

She admitted she didn’t even know who Chavez Jr. was at first, so she did what any good mom would do. She Googled him. That’s when she found out his age… and made the mistake of reading internet comments. Seeing all the hate directed towards her son, she clapped back, saying, “If they want to get in the ring, all those haters want to get in the ring themselves; they can then speak.” Otherwise? They can “Just shut up.” Hold on, but there’s more!

Jake Paul’s mother also gave Chavez Jr. his flowers, calling him “a very well-seasoned boxer.” But she didn’t sugarcoat it — she knows it’s going to be a tough fight. Still, she ended on a hopeful note: “We will see!”

That being said, Jake Paul might’ve gotten a little lucky going up against an older Mike Tyson. But this time, when he steps into the ring with a seasoned fighter, as his mom puts it, we’ll really get to see if he’s got the in-ring skills to back up all the hype. So, what do you think? Did facing a legend like Tyson give Jake Paul the experience he needed to level up? Or is Chavez Jr. about to sharpen his skills and hand Jake Paul a tough reality check, just like Tommy Fury did in 2023?
