Joe Rogan Reacts to Canelo Alvarez’s ‘Wild’ Move to Cruiserweight: ‘Makabu Is a Big Fella’

Canelo Alvarez has proved his worth in the super middleweight division by becoming its maiden undisputed champion. Having beaten three undefeated world titlists and a mandatory in less than a year, Alvarez is undoubtedly the best at 168 lbs right now. He is now looking to move up to 190 and can soon aim to become a five-weight world champion.

While the super middleweight division can still offer him some valid opponents like David Benavidez, Alvarez has already teased a potential fight against WBC cruiserweight champion Ilunga Junior Makabu. Several factors cite it to be a lopsided matchup in favor of the P4P king Alvarez.

But UFC commentator Joe Rogan believes Alvarez can come across a sheer challenge against Makabu. In a chat with George Kambosos Jr., veteran combat analyst Rogan discussed several factors. He even hailed Alvarez’s recent success as the undisputed 168 lbs champion and shed views on his move to the cruiserweight division.

Joe Rogan said, “Canelo is in a crazy position man. He is gonna move up to cruiserweight for his next fight. Isn’t that wild? He just loves the challenges. I mean he is truly one of the all-time greats already. But the fact that he went up to light heavyweight, knocked out Kovalev, and now he wants to move all the way up to the cruiserweight.”

“He [Makabu] is a big fella. I think he [Alvarez] really truly has his mind set on being the greatest Mexican champion of all time. And maybe even the greatest boxer of all time.”

Newly crowned lightweight champion George Kambosos Jr. also agreed to the statements. As we wait for 2022, Alvarez can return somewhere in between may-June.

Canelo Alvarez has his eyes set on big goals

After beating Sergey Kovalev for the light heavyweight title in 2019, Alvarez remained out of action for more than a year. However, he returned to sheer activeness and fought four times in 11 months. Canelo Alvarez beat Callum Smith, Avni Yildirim, Billy Joe Saunders, and Caleb Plant in a row to end 2021 as the WBC, WBA, WBO, IBF, and Ring super middleweight champion. He deserves a lay-off after all these accomplishments.

Meanwhile, Alvarez is still grabbing call-outs from the middleweight division, and this expands his ability to cheery pick his next move. As he seems to have aimed at becoming a five-division titlist, all the other contenders shall wait and see what Alvarez does. That said, the Mexican star can influence the entire super middleweight division’s flow at the time.
