So it’s Jermell Charlo versus Canelo Alavrez now. After a slew of big fights, a few more remain to entertain boxing lovers as the year’s end draws closer. Among those, the bout that stands every chance of becoming another modern classic is the clash of the two undisputed champions. The duo met for their first pre-fight press conference in New York yesterday. Given that he is the underdog, Jermell Charlo, as it became apparent, has a lot to answer. As much as he would love his in-ring performance to do the talking, the meet-up at the Big Apple allowed him to quell a few distasteful misgivings raised against him.

So after the mandatory introductions of the two world champions, the podium paved the way for their respective camp members to share their views and opinions on the fight per se and their charge. Then it was the turn of the boxers. Jermell Charlo was the first to join. Canelo Alvarez followed him a few minutes later. Besides appreciating PBC’s Al Haymon, he thanked the American boxer and his team.

Then Derrick James spoke about what his trainee would bring to the table to defeat a champion like Alvarez. Eddy Reynoso followed and explained how the fight with Charlo could be way different from other fights Alvarez has participated in. Now it is time for the boxer to speak. After the Mexican champion’s turn, Brian Custer asked Charlo what exactly he wished to establish, moving up two divisions to face one of the biggest names in boxing. Charlo replied, “Well, I just really want to, you know, acquire my haters, quiet my doubters, and turn non-believers into believers….

Then, turning over to Canelo, Custer asked him about a publication where his recent performance against John Ryder was discussed. It was mentioned that there are chances that Alvarez might find himself in a ‘dogfight’ against the younger Charlo. Guadalajara-born Canelo Alvarez responded that while he was happy to learn that certain people were talking about his past fights, the fact remains that he is well aware of why they happened. But having said that, he is wise and farsighted about what he needs to do in each fight.

Brian Custer took up a similar media-related query with Jermell Charlo. He shared that while reviewing updates on the fight, he came across a piece from Boxing News that mentioned that it would be a cakewalk for Canelo Alvarez, given his strength and vast experience. ‘Iron Man’ immediately said, “And f**k them, they don’t like me. They ain’t never like me anyways; them m***er****ers don’t like me; they write all that crazy sh*t… talk crazy about me; they talk crazy about them, damn like, be proud of what’s going on; be happy for the fight, you know, but I don’t care about them.

A little bit about the battle so far…

The fight takes place on September 30 in Las Vegas. Though details regarding the venue remain unclear, T-Mobile Arena might be privileged to host two of the biggest names in boxing. Initially, Jermall Charlo, Jermell Charlo’s twin brother, was expected to stand opposite Canelo Alvarez. Hence, it surprised many when ‘Iron Man’ finally turned up. The duo will meet at 168 pounds, clashing for Alvarez’s undisputed title.
