Jermall Charlo’s short resurgence in the boxing ring has been put on hold. Now he will fight in the courts. Reports suggest that the middleweight fighter was taken into police custody for charges emerging from his recent drinking and driving episode. Amidst these concerning headlines, a few older details have emerged. They suggest that this is not the first time Charlo has been booked for a similar crime.

On Monday evening, the older Charlo twin was arrested after the fighter landed in an accident at about 6:41 pm. He was engrossed in an argument with the other driver and fled the scene by the time cops arrived. As per Ring Magazine, the cops had to chase him for about a mile until they could apprehend him. On Tuesday, he was charged with ‘Driving While Intoxicated’, ‘Fleeing or Attempting to Elude a Police Officer’, and a ‘Collision Involving Damage to a Vehicle Exceeding $200’.

As per the Magazine, in April, he was also arrested for another car accident. He is due to appear in court on the 20th of May for these old charges that range from injury to a child with the intention to cause bodily injury and ‘driving with a previously suspended license’. Boxing reporter, Michael Benson sourced the publication in his social media report.

Monday’s accident could leave the fighter in much trouble as the new charges might potentially violate his April arrest’s bond conditions. At that point, the Texas native was on a $15,500 bond, and one among the 15 stipulated conditions of the bond included, “shall commit no offense against the law of this or any other State.”

The continuous run-ins with the cops and the potential harm he has involved others in have prompted the WBC to finally take cognizance of his behavior and strip him of his title.

Jermall Charlo loses his WBC middleweight title

The 33-0 undefeated fighter was upgraded to full WBC middleweight titleholder in 2019. However, for a while, he remained completely off the ring, as he cited mental health issues. They allowed him to retain his title for almost two whole years without defending it even once between 2021 and 2023. The sanctioning body sided with him, highlighting that the mental health of fighters was their priority.

However, his latest actions have nudged the WBC to strip him of his title. In a diplomatic statement, the body wrote, “The WBC has provided and will continue to do as much as possible to support Jermall Charlo during his difficult times with regards to Mental Wellness.”
