Is Jermall Charlo dodging real competition, or is he just biding his time for a big fight?

A year-long wait is coming to an end as Jermall Charlo is ready to mark his return to the squared circle. But there is a twist. The former WBC middleweight champion will not face the opponent he wanted to: Demetrius Andrade. However, nothing is lost as he will top off the event headlined by Gervonta Davis, serving fans a stacked card and a fight full of exciting action.

Charlo, 34, last fought against Jose Benavidez Jr. last November in a gritty performance. While he showed glimpses of excellence, his unanimous decision win couldn’t mask his rustiness. Instead of staying active, he took a long break, and when decided to make a comeback, he failed to attract Andrade’s interest. Interestingly, Charlo, at 33-0, turned to his Instagram handle and went live, where he discussed his coming fight and plans.

He continued to call out Andrade, 36, to come live with him. But that didn’t happen. ‘Hitman’ also expressed his eagerness to book a date with him and warned him of losing the money he would make. He said, “‘Cause they’re going to let somebody else slip in and make the money. Like, yeah, a dumb a**, you’re going to let somebody else slip in and make the money.”

Following this, Charlo again stressed his desire to exchange punches with ‘Boo Boo’ and also admitted he had signed up for a date, December 14. In addition, the Lafayette native revealed he had intentions to fight Caleb Plant next year. He continued, “I want the ‘Boo Boo’ fight. But if I don’t get the ‘Boo Boo’ fight, y’all tune in December 14. I’mma fight somebody. Caleb Plant? I fight Caleb Plant too, you know, by next year.”

The boxing fans are excited about Charlo’s return to the boxing fold and putting on a show for the fans. They are still waiting on who the former two-division champion will pick for his next fight. It seems The Ring’s Jake Donovan already knows the answer.

Jermall Charlo’s next opponent unmasked

Donovan recently disclosed on his X account who Charlo picked up for his December return. He believed that Thomas ‘Cornflake’ LaManna was the leading candidate to put his pen to paper and agree to a fight with Charlo. Notably, the 32-year-old has been on a splendid 8-fight win streak after losing to Erislandy Lara back in 2021. He has already gone through the ropes earlier this year and is looking to extend his streak and insert his name into title conversations.

Have an interesting take?

But for Charlo, it’s a tune-up fight. A win will help him build his career again and a win could potentially open doors to other opportunities, such as a fight with Canelo Alvarez. He can also endeavor to get his WBC strap back from Carlos Adames. It all depends on how well Charlo prepares for the fight and whether he can return to his prior self on the ‘Tank’ vs Lamont Roach undercard.
