Yet, instead of stopping, Jermall Charlo allegedly fled away from the scene. Eventually, at Pearland’s Broadway St., the law enforcement officials cornered and arrested him. The 34-year-old boxer, who returned to boxing after a 24-month hiatus, last fought Jose Benavidez Jr. on the David BenavidezDemetrius Andrade card. Subsequently, buzz of a potential clash with Canelo Alvarez, who had in September defeated twin brother Jermell Charlo, arose. But to no avail. And this is not certainly a one-off incident as Charlo was charged with another misconduct roughly a month before the DWI case.

Legal woes continue for Jermall Charlo

talkSPORT‘s Michael Benson cited a TMZ update in a tweet, explaining that the legal process about Jermall Charlo’s May incident had advanced to the point where he is now facing the criminal charges in the court. It read that Charlo has been officially charged in a legal capacity of two specific crimes: driving while intoxicated (DWI) and leaving the scene of a crash.

It could be perhaps to address the charges against him and determine the next steps in the legal process. So the report further mentioned a scheduled date, November 7, for Jermall Charlo to appear in court for a legal hearing. In May, per an update received from the police department, ESPN shared the presence of three misdemeanors charged against Charlo: DWI, fleeing the scene of an accident, and eluding police.

The repercussions of the incident reverberated in the boxing world as well. WBC president Mauricio Suleiman shared news of the sanctioning body stripping Charlo of his WBC belt. During his long absence, the ‘Hitman’ had been holding the position of a ‘champion in recess’, the status which often caused much consternation among fans.

A history of legal troubles

In a strict sense, for Jermall Charlo, it might not be the first brush with legal issues. There appear to have been other cases as well. In 2021, the former champion was reportedly accused of walking away with a waitresses’ money. The following year, he faced arrest for a ‘punching or grabbing’ a man’ case pertaining to September 2021. Then, in April, Charlo was charged with ‘assault causing bodily harm to a family member’ and ‘driving with a previously suspended license’. The ‘Hitman’ subsequently filed a $15,500 bond to get himself free.
