Errol Spence Jr. was dealt his first professional defeat last year by Terence Crawford. The fight, billed as a welterweight unification showdown, left Spence hungry for a rematch. But there’s a catch. Spence didn’t like making the 147-pound welterweight limit and has set his sights on a rematch at the higher 154-pound division.

Now, a surprising name has emerged as a potential new trainer for Spence: Derek ‘Bozy’ Ennis, father and coach of IBF welterweight champion Jaron Ennis. Will Bozy’s offer to improve Spence’s defense be enough to lure the former champion away from his longtime trainer Derrick James?

During a recent interview, the conversation quickly zeroed in on Spence’s next move. “Spence is moving to 154. Is that something you would be interested in? Train Errol Spence?” the interviewer asked, probing the possibility of a new alliance. Without hesitation, Ennis expressed his enthusiasm, “Oh, I’d love to train Errol Spence, man. I already put the message out already. You know what I mean? Spence, come see me, man. I got something for you, man. Maybe get this shit right and get them titles back,” he stated, showcasing his readiness to embark on this new venture.

Furthermore, Ennis elaborated on his vision for Spence’s future. When asked about the enhancements he could bring to Spence’s game, Ennis shared, “Well, Errol Spence is a great fighter. All I would put in the helm is mostly with that defense technique that I do. Working on defense and change the style up a little bit. As a matter of fact, I wouldn’t change nothing that he’s doing now. I would add on. That’s what I would do. Add on my stuff to him. And I think he’d be a spectacular fighter.” This insightful dialogue sheds light on Ennis’ strategic approach, focusing on fortifying Spence’s defense without altering his proven methods.

But what is up with Errol Spence and who is he poised to fight next? Mayweather Promotions’ CEO talked about that not so long ago.

Will Errol Spence Jr. get what he wants?

After Sebastian Fundora’s split decision victory over Tim Tszyu for the WBC and WBO Super-Welterweight titles, the boxing landscape shifted. Errol Spence Jr., initially eyeing the winner, quickly refocused his challenge to ‘The Towering Inferno’ Sebastian Fundora. However, the WBO threw a curveball by designating Terence Crawford as Fundora’s mandatory, complicating Spence’s title aspirations.

Amidst this, Leonard Ellerbe of Mayweather Promotions hinted at a different path, “I just saw that tweet yesterday from Errol…Errol gets what he wants…if that’s what he wants, I’m sure Al [Haymon] gon’ make it happen.” This statement underscores the fluid dynamics of boxing matchmaking and Spence Jr.’s potential influence over his next fight’s direction.
