Can Campbell Hatton escape his father's shadow and finally prove his worth in the ring?

If you are not sure whether being born with a silver spoon is a boon or bane, you should have a look at Campbell Hatton. The fans will always measure him keeping his father, Ricky, as a yardstick. That leaves no room for error and experiments. But the British fighter always wanted to do one thing, to show people that he could dig in. And he has another opportunity to do it when he faces James Flint in a revenge match.

Campbell and Flint had a run in March this year, with the Central Area super-lightweight strap on the line. While he started strong initially, he soon fizzled out in a fight where the punches were traded till the last bell. The two will surely give fans another exciting encounter when they clash this Saturday at the Co-OP LIVE Arena, Manchester. Before that happens, let’s have a look at how the boxers stack up.

Flint has showcased his technical prowess and has built his professional career on it. The Doncaster native has a strong foundational base, where he relies more on his skills than his power to generate results. This has helped him rack up an impressive record of 14-2-2 with 3 KOs. What’s more, his initial career had been built on a small-hall circuit, as he juggled boxing along with a full-time job. But that didn’t deter him from reaching the heights of success, as he swayed the traditional fans.

There might be concern among his fans, as Flint has registered a mixed result of 2-1-1 in his last four fights. He started his run by capturing the vacant Central Area super-lightweight strap against Joe Garside, followed it with a draw against Adam Sircar and a win over Hatton. But he dropped his title in the last fight to Kyle Boyd in a closely contested fight.

The 27-year-old is not your typical brawler despite adopting an aggressive style and coming forward. He utilizes his weapons well but he prefers to break down his opponents throughout 10 rounds. His KO ratio of 21.43% also suggests the same. However, other details about Flint such as his height and reach are not available.

Compared to him, Hatton had a different start to his career, as he outmuscled and outclassed every opponent in his way til he met Flint. The Lancashire native, at 23, is the younger of the two and has fewer fights under his belt. But his boxing IQ sets him apart, along with his fan-friendly style. You can look at his record column of 14-1 with 5 KOs and point out he has ways to go and has yet to mold himself into a complete boxer. In addition, Hatton possesses more power behind his punches, as hinted by his KO ratio of 35.71%.

That’s not it. ‘Hurricane’ also has a slight advantage when it comes to weight, as he recorded 139.8 lbs (63.4 kg) when he last stood on the scales, whereas Flint had registered 139 lbs (63.0 kg). He also towers at 5’6″ (168 cm), which might restrict how he throws punches and how he defends himself. The question is whether he will return to the winner’s column and exact his revenge.

The gulf of the skills between Flint and Hatton was apparent. What troubled Hatton was his gas tank, as he appeared tired after a couple of rounds, and Flint forced him out of the fight with a barrage of diverse punches. Those included uppercuts, straight rights, and lefts. His switch of stance and his effective pinches also proved critical. You throw into the mix his durability and resilience and you have a fighter, who could ensure your power hitting goes to the bin. One also has to look for his left, which has caused issues for many.

Hatton, on the other hand, is a volume puncher and has a high output rate. He throws punches in quick succession, causing his foes to go on backfoot and get hit by some of his heavy punches. He also targets the body and it results in a grueling punishment. While he holds the stylistic advantage, he might have to fix his stamina and how he goes through the fight. You can expect a change in results, as this might be the opportunity Hatton had been waiting for. To tumble and then rise again.
